Spinoff: Teachers, what would you like to tell parents, but can't.

Nice to know that someone with a Bachelor's degree suddenly can usurp someone who has a Doctorate *and* can diagnose ADHD.

Oh yes. It's my saving grace. I spend at least two hours with it every Saturday morning. Helps me to carry on when I've got nothing left.

Your child is not gifted. Really, he is not. And the truth is, he's not even very bright.

Your hostility and unstable home environment have put your child in the cradle to prison pipeline.

Your kid is annoying.
You are annoying.
Your kid isn't as bright as you think.
No, he isn't bored, he is misbehaving.
We (teachers) make fun of you (parents) a lot.

1) most teachers have a M.Ed.
2) how do you think a doctor diagnoses a child with ADD? They give teachers a checklist. No really.

Thank you.

Actually this is how you diagnose ADHD. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder/how-is-adhd-diagnosed.shtml

And this thread is why I don't trust a teacher's assessment that a child has ADHD.

Would you like me to come to your work and tell you how to do it? Oh, you wouldn't? Because I'm not educated or trained in your line of work?

See where I'm going with this?

True. (Along with a slew of other tests.) When I had DS tested, one of his teachers was truly pi$$ed at me for having him tested--she clearly felt he had no issues, and made a point of writing that she didn't see the need for it.

You are annoying.
Your grammar is poor, your intellect is substandard.
I can't believe I'm paying this much for the school, and you're teaching him.
<smile, smile, mustn't let the dimwit notice the disdain...not that she would....for DS's sake...>

Hilarious! Did you even read what you just googled?! It basically stated that they physician "gathers information" from pertinent sources (i.e. school). Idiot.

Wow. I'm seriously scared to send my child to school now.

You're a dumbass. There's nothing wrong with the pp's grammar. The newest insult on DCUM is to put down someone's grammar when there's nothing wrong with it.

Did YOU read it? Excerpts...

No single test can diagnose a child as having ADHD

The pediatrician or mental health specialist will first try to rule out other possibilities for the symptoms. (insert long list of other possibilities here)

A specialist will also check school and medical records for clues, to see if the child's home or school settings appear unusually stressful or disrupted, and gather information from the child's parents and teachers

The specialist also will ask:
Are the behaviors excessive and long-term, and do they affect all aspects of the child's life?
Do they happen more often in this child compared with the child's peers?
Are the behaviors a continuous problem or a response to a temporary situation?
Do the behaviors occur in several settings or only in one place, such as the playground, classroom, or home?

Finally, if after gathering all this information the child meets the criteria for ADHD, he or she will be diagnosed with the disorder.

It is a process, not a simple checklist given to the teacher. Or at least it shouldn't be!
