| MuniServices is part of the PRA Group, aka Portfolio Recovery Associates. PRA Group is a collection of debt buyers and debt collection companies. They are known abusers of debt collection practices and do pull numbers out of the air and rely on gullible people to pay the false debt claims. You have to treat MuniServices as you would third-party debt collectors, namely send a debt validation letter to make THEM prove you do not owe the taxes/fees. It is not YOUR responsibility to prove you do not owe, THEY are the ones that have to prove it! And anyone from MuniServices (and any other debt collection agencies for that matter) would say you will go to jail is lying. All debt collection attempts, including phone calls, text messages, etc. are to STOP once they receive the debt validation letter (sent via Certified Mail, Return Receipt). I successfully muted Portfolio Recovery ASSociates through the help of an ebook from Credit Sabre. |
| Stupid question what does DC stand for. I live in Santa Paula California and I just received a letter from them in the city of Ventura in an old address |

+1 You are not the only one. Maybe then the D.C. government will get the message. But not likely. |
+1 Predator lending, invalid debt collection attempts, off kilter neighbors - all use the same predatory practices. They rely on you being more stupid than they are. As if. |

| Adding to the thread here - I just received a $10,000 tax bill with over $5000 of additional penalties tacked on, for tax year 2012. Of course, I didn't live in DC during tax year 2012, I moved there March 2013. Dear Better Business Bureau... |
|
I also received a letter stating I owed the state money from a year where I did not live in the district.
I called the number (1800-987-0999) and spoke with someone who said I had to dispute the claim, and send the letter to (Businesstax@muniservices.com) with a copy of the tax return for the year in question, and that they will deal with the issue within 90 days. |
| MuniServices has sent me a letter threatening to put a lein on my interherited house in Daly City. I was unaware of the need to get a business license and now they are demanding my Schedule E's for the last three years of rental income. I had to put $100,000 into this house to get it suitable for renting and they want to tax me on my gross income. I'm just trying to recoup my money. On what authority are they allowed to do this? |
Talk to your local tax office. |

Keeping this thread active for other people facing the same issue:
Just received a debt collection letter from Muni claiming we owe taxes from four years ago to DC. This is news to me as DC never sent any such notice. Like other posters, there is a correlation with us moving away from DC - the year we are supposed to owe for is the year after we left the city. Obviously we will not be send our cash to Muni without thoroughly investigating the whole of the matter first. It's a shame DC government has allowed this company to rampage like this. |
| I was active duty Army in 2008 but my home state was Texas. They want me to pay the "late" DC income tax and penalty + interest. Under Civil Service Relief Act, my state tax is due to my home state or the state I entered active duty. I will write a letter explaining them to prove that I was not a Texas resident at that time |
| I just received a letter from MuniServices saying I owed for 2012. I moved to DC in April of 2012, but was unemployed and the only income i received was unemployment from Oregon. I filed in Oregon, but not DC as I had no DC sourced income. I'm concerned with sending them my 2012 tax returns since that has my social security number on it. |
Edited to add: I just looked at the DC website. Apparently I was required to file in DC because I lived there more than 183 days, even though I was a permanent resident of Oregon (who knew)....but that doesn't explain the $1,061 tax liability they are coming up with. How would I owe DC tax on non-DC sourced income? Not to mention the $900 in penalties and interest they are coming up with. |
| I just received a letter from MuniServices saying I owe about $300 + interest/penalties (all in about $600) in taxes from 2010. I was a student at the time in DC and made less than $7k that year working part time retail. Can they really come after me for this? I don't know how I could have owed even $300 in taxes with so little income. Unfortunately I can only find my federal return from that year! I also received no notices regarding delinquent returns in the last 6 years from the DC government. Anyone know how to go about remedying this?? |
