Eric Rudolph, is that you? |
Schools deal with this by calling it Winter Break. |
The courts have already decided that you can have paid holidays on religious days if the holidays serve a secular purpose. Since Christmas is a well-established tradition in both a religious and secular sense, it qualifies under this legal principle. So there is no constitutional conflict between the separation clause and the celebration of Christmas. Easter, not having a credible secular role in our culture, would not. |
Eh hem. Back to bitching about Christmas. Am I the only one that find Christmas excruciating (and, birthdays for that matter)? We are trapped in a cycle of buying stuff for family members that they don't need. I've tried to implement drawing names out of a hat but them half the family continues to buy lots of stuff for everyone, anyway. When it comes to opening presents it's a disgusting frenzy of tearing off wrapping paper and either exclaiming with joy or looking around with polite smiles. And thats just the adults. The kids always get way more than they need. There is so much waste from the wrapping and packaging materials. But then the thing that bugs me most is that I end up being the one to find a home for all the new things that come in the door. I try to do an informal, one new toy in one old toy out policy. Anyway, that's my Christmas rant. |
Urk . . . I don't think its only liberals that believe in the separation of church and state - at least I hope not. Although these days, you never know . . . |
You have got to be joking. It is liberals who have made the laws I have to follow in my workplace, about giving people time off for their religious observances, which may or may not "follow the feds". I could forsee a "floating religious holiday" that doesn't name Christmas or HAVE to be on 12/25 (it's a stretch) but not that anyone would "have" to work that day. The sep of church and state is about preventing a state sponsored.mandated religion, not about banning religion. |

I totally agree. My house is filled with crap/toys, and now I have to buy MORE for my kids or their little hearts will be broken by a culture that tells them that if they don't get a load of crap this year, they must have been on the naughty list. I do it because I like to see the joy and wonder of Christmas, and I remember how I loved it, but I really do hate it. Esp. the adult gift giving, I think we should just focus on kids. I don't need another horrible sweater from my MIL. |
I understand the true meaning of Christmas you dolt. However I understand that CHristmas in this country has morphed from just a Christian holiday to the largest marketing event of the year. The fact remains that the day itself is a Fed holiday and still associated with Christianity which liberals hate. It makes them feel guilty. Already they've succeeded (somewhat) is having people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Liberals want to ban every and anything. They know what is best for you and your family. |
"Liberal" and "Christian" are not mutually exclusive. Lots of us are both. All this fearmongering and hysteria and crazy hyperbole do a real disservice to normal, reasonable conservatives. |
Why do conservatives believe in a God that disappears if we aren't able to wear our tassels and philactories? |
If that's true then why is the ACLU called liberal? Seems to mr it is conservatives who spend their time banning things. Btw most liberals in this country are Christian. This is easily verifiable by looking at the 2010 election polls. |
I am a liberal, I am a pagan. I love the winter solstice and am happy to share the holiday that Christians stole with them. Works out great for me, what with the time off, the parties, the pagan symbols of rebirth and eternal life..... so I don't want to ban it. I thank you for preserving my holiday despite the encroachments of Christianity over the centuries. And those manager scenes you put up all over the place? Just another version of the Goddess giving birth to Her son, without the help of a human father, thanks so much. You reinforce my religion all the time. |
BTW. The First Amendment prohibits BOTH state sponsored religion AND bans or govtal interference with private religious practice!! FYI. Whether Walmat requires its employees to say Happy Holidays to customers is NOT a First Amendment issue. No federal law speaks to this, either way. |
Whether or not the govt recognizes Christmas as a holiday or day off has NOTHING to do with a "ban." The First Amendment prohibits the USG from banning the celebration of Christmas. There are already people who work on Christmas for a variety of reasons. Some Christians work Christmas a means to give back (hospitals, etc). Others work Christmas because they do not celebrate it, allowing their Christian colleagues to celebrate. |
