| Heather McDonald had a good podcast today on "Juicy Crimes" that covers this case. |
| There is video of when the police told Don’s mother that her son had died. Gut wrenching. I’m sure it was too painful for her to be part of this doc. |
| For anyone interested, the Hulu doc is an episode of Killer Cases (season 4, episode 12) and it features more court footage. What I find interesting is that the Hulu doc is fairly one sided and only features the prosecutions’ side. Yet, in the Netflix doc which has full cooperation from the Shirillas, the family comes off way worse! |
When's she's sobbing, "why can't he just be in jail", I lost it. No one wants a visit from cops, but she absolutely did not see it coming, and that is crushing |
| Can someone explain where Dom got his money? He had an apartment, a Cadillac and was buying fancy things for the girl. The area they’re from seems pretty middle class. I’ve seen some rumblings on Reddit so one can only assume massive drug dealer? |
He lived next door to his parents and I think they owned the property? Ohio has the lowest cost of living and there are so many "middle class" families with crazy disposable income. There's another episode about this case that explains that he had money from his parents and had played around with investments and crypto. Both of the guys had jobs, even though they were lower-level hourly wage. Given the scale in the vehicle along with weed and shrooms makes me think dealing was also in the mix, but I'm not sure Dom was necessarily the CEO of the operation. With Mackenzie's parents' attitude toward drugs, I'd lean more towards her being a small time dealer. I've seen the body cam footage of Dom's mom being notified and it is indeed gut-wrenching. She's so casual and polite with the officer, ready to help out with whatever he's investigating, and it just takes her an uncomfortably long time to realize why the chaplain is there and why they're asking questions about Dom's whereabouts. Mackenzie's parents' are true pieces of work but what a contrast between her father's description of the relationship and the recorded arguments. Oh sure, she was building a life with him, so mature that they didn't think twice about letting their 17-year-old move in with a 20-year-old man. I mean, come on, they did a lot of cooking together... Then you hear Mackenzie berating Dom and calling him a little b****. Her parents' reaction to finding out Dom was dead is very telling--they saw him as a good guy and were glad their kid was with him. I doubt Dom's mom thought the same about Mackenzie. |
| I just finished watching this. I wanted to believe it was an accident but the she came off as guilty. And I feel like her parents definitely enabled a lot of bad behavior. Do they not hear how ridiculous they sound? |
What’s the name of the Hulu version |
There's not another proper documentary about it, but there are two crime doc shows that feature the case. "Killer Cases" S3, E12 (Murder on Wheels) "Mean Girl Murders" S2, E7 (Under the Influence) |
The first thing that stuck out to me about her parents and their parenting style was when she said she moved in with Dom right after she graduated high school. I was like, huh? |
|
And couldn’t her parents dress appropriately for court instead of sloppy casual.
Was it determined that she wanted to die too? How could she know she would survive that crash. Maybe she got mad at Dom and accelerated to scare him, then lost control. |
Seriously re the parents' clothing choices. Total schlubs. They seem like horrible people all around. |
Yes..I wish they had brought in a doctor that would have said that if you had an episode and "passed out", your foot would relax and would not be pushing down hard onto an accelerator! |
If my math is correct She hadn’t even graduated yet. She was 17 at the time of the crash and they had attended a graduation party earlier that evening. So she has a summer birthday and she moved in with Dom during her senior year? That’s crazy ! |
| This was such a weird story with such odious people. The only person who came off well was Davion's father. Kenzie's parents were beyond belief but Dom's father and sister were strange too and seemed so blase. Pointless and stupid lives. I felt dirty after watching it. I don't even really understand it. Was she trying to kill herself too? What was going on? Was she just completely drug-addled? |
