How much sleep do you (personally) need?

I feel fantastic but wondered if this is unhealthy so I did a bit of research. Segmented sleep is how humans did it for millennia—it’s the way we are wired! It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that people began to sleep in one big time lump.

i've been sleeping for two hours on the sofa between 10-midnight, then doing dishes/walk the dog/clean, and then get to bed around 1-1:30. alarm goes off a bit after 7, so it is all a crapshoot how much sleep i get.

unfortunately for me, according to the app those two hours on the sofa are usually my best sleep of the night. i rarely get into deep sleep in my bed, and maaaybe some REM.

It’s completely normal to get most/all of your deep sleep in the first part of the night. I always get all of mine before 2am.

Yes -- this is why I actually hate going to bed later than my usual time (~11 o'clock) -- it prevents me from getting the true restorative sleep that happens during the hours of 11-2. When I stay up past 12:30 or so, I just end up having fitful sleep and feeling tired the next day.

I'm fine with 7 or so, and can operate indefinitely on that.

I can also do 6 hours for a few days in a row before it catches up on me.

But if I sleep without an alarm, my sweet spot where i naturally wake up is 8 hours 40 mins. And nothing beats waking up naturally without an alarm for feeling great for starting the day. I get that probably 1-2 times a week.

I aim for 8.5 each night, prob average about 8. And I sleep in or take a long nap (so about three hours extra of sleep) at least once a weekend.

So, it’s not enough. I’m 41 and have three kids.

Time in bed or actual sleep? I give myself 8-8.5 but only sleep 7.45

7.5-8.5, more than that I feel groggy

8 is my sweet spot, typically get 7 on weekdays

8-9 is optimal, but I am naturally high-energy and can do a lot even after a night of broken or shortened sleep.

PP here. Actually asleep. I aim to be in bed at 10:30, lights off at 11 and I go to sleep basically immediately. Alarm goes off at 7:20 and I get out of bed at 7:30. So that’s 8hr 20min of sleep.

I’m prob an hour late to lights out once a week and a half hour late once or twice a week? So it prob averages out to more like 8 hours a night. Then almost every weekend I sleep in one day until 11 or so, or take a long (2 hour plus) nap in the afternoon. So that helps a bit, but I still need way more than I’m getting.
