I grew up partially in Florida and people in my neighborhood were openly racist, not even remotely shy about it. My parents ended up moving away.
My husband's rural Florida home town literally has a Trump shrine and just so, so much meth. As a pregnant woman right now, I wouldn't even visit Florida because there's now a serious risk they'll let you die if something goes wrong. |
I’ll take either over those living in the swamp with a-holes. |
^^ this trash is exactly why people avoid the south |
|
OP,
It’s not just the south. Posters on this site have plenty to say about “flyover country” as well. I figure that a lot of it comes from a sense of superiority and/or ignorance. I have a relative who hates a particular region even though she’s never been there, nor has she ever met anyone from there. |
There are many northern cities where Black people were and continue to be treated poorly. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and it was super segregated, much more than in the South. |
This---and many other comments in this thread---are absolutely vile. And if dismissing "those people" out of hand is not overt racism, or something very close to it, I don't know what is. |
I agree, but the difference to me is that the south has been run by politicians who pander to the worst of their people for generations. It impacts policy and culture. |
|
the racism is part of the culture.
I don't want my kids to ever have that awful accent. |
|
Well, Florida Man is always good for a rip roaring laugh.
|
Technically, it’s under the mason Dixon line, so it is the south. And yes, you are right. It’s different in Montgomery county Pa, another city suburb - the north. It’s two different worlds. |
| Is this really a sincere question? |

I have found people in the south to be as varied as people in the north.
However, northeners simply cloak their racism - or not as in the case of South Boston. The south side of Chicago certainly isnt' a haven of integration either. I wouldn't circumscribe it as simply racism. It's wider net is tribalism. I have found southerners to be more inclusive of its local historical black population than the more recent immigration waves of the last 50 years. People all over just tend to be suspicious and unwelcoming of newcomers. |
| I am from New England and I think of the South as a place where Black and Jewish people were lynched. I also think of it as an intolerant place for LGBTQ. |
Is Florida considered part of the South? |
It is. |
