I'd give him graphic novels and maybe a magazine subscription like the Week. When my kids were younger, I encouraged them to try all different styles and levels of books, but by age 14, if he isn't picking up books voluntarily (and a lot of 14 year olds dont!) you can't force it. Graphic novels are quick, satisfying, and highly engaging. Same for magazines... he can read quick article and be done. Our 14 year old reads our Atlantic, and he's never met a graphic novel he didn't like... he'll even secretly read his little sister's Raina Telgmeier ones.
