Some of it is clearly virtue signaling by the liberal School Board (I’m on the left, but this is obvious) and some of it is actual operational need. There are certain days where you expect call-outs due to religious holidays and if they are significant enough it hampers the ability to run school smoothly. This isn’t a student thing, it is a teacher/bus driver/etc problem.

No. The School Board sets the calendar and recently added the unnecessary religious holidays.

Parents want their kids in school consistently, not randomly taking days off.

In all seriousness, has anyone brought this embarrassment of a calendar up with the School Board? This should be their priority quite frankly. We don't need to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Kwanza, Lunar New Year and whatever other nonsense holiday they conjure up instead of educating our kids before June!!!

+1. People are talking all about all the “unnecessary” holidays other than Christmas, so i’m really happy you put that on the list. I’m sure if the school board took off Christmas as a holiday there would be a huge problem on getting it back. Let people take their own days off of school if they want to celebrate their holidays. To the rest of us, we aren’t doing anything so why not go to school?

Then we’ll hear from the, “Why are the kids at school when they’re just watching videos? They can’t learn new marital so I’m pulling them from school and letting them sleep in” contingent.

There was never any evidence of operational problems on any of the new religious holidays. In fact, random other days had higher absences but that was ignored.

Bottom line, there's no operational reason for these religious holidays.

It is a ripple effect. Neighboring school districts started giving these holidays. Staff who live outside the county struggled with childcare and were calling out on these days. FCPS decided to adopt these holidays too. Where FCPS goes above and beyond isn’t with religious holidays. It’s random padding days to bridge long weekends and 2 days off between quarters when most districts only do 1.

Work is piling up at my office. We employ a lot of default parents and they all took leave today. An easy solution would have been to allow telework (in which work output is strictly monitored so no playing hooky) but noooo. Maybe one day they'll learn.

So…if they took Christmas Day and made it a regular school day and then scheduled the winter break in late January, you think everyone would be totally cool with that?

LOL, feel free to advocate for your dumb end of quarter break, but nobody wants that. The vast majority of the country takes time off at the end of the calendar year.

Christmas is not a specific holiday in FCPS, it is only one day, and it is a federal holiday. Winter Break is a bloated mess that has little to do with Christmas.

My MS and HS kids slept in, caught up on homework, and are now enjoying some chill time outside. Their Wed-Fri at school will be more productive bc of it.

If they're making that argument, they can fix spring break like they attempted to do a few years ago. They just have to drag Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William on board. I celebrate Easter, but I don't need spring break to be tied to it.
