Who are some major figures who would be cancelled if they were around today?

So, you’d give bill Cosby a pass because he was such a comedic genius who redefined the sitcom?

I used to love Louis CK but honestly all of his jokes about being a creep, jerking off too much, etc just suddenly weren’t as funny when you found out he was just describing his actual life and it’s not “haha listen to this exaggerated caricature of me”

That said I saw a recent clip of him talking about the whole thing and his regrets, etc and I’d totally be interested in seeing him again. But if it turns out it’s still just him talking about his dick and jerking off I’ll pass

I don't want to be Cosby's friend, but the show was good. We should still hold people accountable for their actions but that doesn't mean they didn't produce greatness.

Eric Clapton is a virulent racist and Rob Lowe filmed himself having sex with a young teenager.

Only linking to (one example) of the former https://www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/18go8k7/i_just_came_across_this_racist_rant_that_eric/

At this point why would anyone care? Just turn off the classic rock station if it offends your ears. But Clapton is too old to be canceled now.

Well because he’s not just kind of weird, he’s a really vicious racist! It’s off putting! The music doesn’t offend my ears!

Also, the attitude “just turn it off if you don’t like it” is literally the thing conservatives complain about.

We can't erase history. It is what it is. He was a product of a different time and different culture. Everyone can't be held to American standards of 2025.

Have you read 1984? Of course we can erase history. History is written by the victors.

Nobody says it wasn’t an influential show… but a lot of his crimes were enabled by his celebrity. It’s hard to say as much as I loved that show as a kid it would be worth all of the sexual assaults he carried out.

Also one of the things people loved about him was his apparently sincere honesty, decency and emphasis on kindness… which turns out to be all BS.

America is a strange place….

In the US today, Jesus would be cancelled and Hitler wouldn’t. Very strange place and I have no idea how we got here.

Agree - MAGA has turned the whole conservative philosophy upside down. Imagine the truth social posts Trump would unleash on Jesus.

Another tortured genius/artist. The world isn't black and white and I don't think there are tons of talented people who just didn't get a chance. The cream rises to the top.

The only people that this would apply to are women. Men are endlessly redeemable.

And even pre-social media, women's transgressions would surface and lead to their being ostracized.

He raped and beat one of his many wives. That’s not been ok for some time.

A young Joe Biden. That hack perv’s career would end quickly with all his handsy crap.

+1. Now as a parent I love that show more every episode was about how kids kids needed to realize who was paying! Now I get it lol

That's the prob with cancel culture and there's certain shows like Las Vegas which is pretty cringe but amusing at the same time - and movies that really are raunchy that would never get made now but honestly, it's not the biggest deal. We have so much unfiltered ridiculous online forums and postings that comparatively it's not the worst things.

There's a ton of politicians that should be cancelled but alas, can't be because of the office they hold. Entertainment is just that. If you don't want to watch, don't. Not a fan, don't buy. But cancel culture is dangerous as it's a blanket judgement not providing for shades of gray which is the of color real life.

I hate the term cancel culture. No one is entitled to an audience.
