Rodney Dangerfield for his fat jokes. Great comic. I saw him live and there was none better. |
Cancel culture is a myth, peeps.
Your crime has to be pretty bad to not get a redemption tour. I was looking at upcoming comedy shows and both Louis CK and Chris Delia are touring. Mel Gibson is in movies again. And when the "crime" is dubious (Ansari, Gunn, Takei, Lowe), the initial furor wears off and things resume as normal. I would like someone to note someone who was truly cancelled who didn't deserve it. Seriously...name one. |
Yeah, brains made of oatmeal since they can't think critically enough to come up with anything other than their vapid, uninteresting response. |
This thread would be a lot more interesting if people would say what the person did. I had no idea Eric Clapton and Rob Lowe were creeps and have no clue what they did. |
The cancel culture exsisted...it was to keep girls and women in line mostly...teen pregnancy is the biggest one. Living with your partner and not married etc |
Meh, he's an 80yo white male. If you believe DCUM many 80yo white males are sitting around watching Fox News 24/7 and spewing racist garbage. Find any FIL thread. At least Clapton was a genius in his time. |
Google is your friend. Rob Lowe wouldn't be canceled. He is in on the joke. |
Eric Clapton is a virulent racist and Rob Lowe filmed himself having sex with a young teenager. Only linking to (one example) of the former https://www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/18go8k7/i_just_came_across_this_racist_rant_that_eric/ |
I’d rather tolerate an imperfect genius when the alternative is mildly talented mediocrity. Just goes to show people can’t be great at everything. |
At this point why would anyone care? Just turn off the classic rock station if it offends your ears. But Clapton is too old to be canceled now. |
Woody Allen |
Right, we’re talking about people who do bad things - like Mickey mantle was basically a bill Cosby type. Not imaginary conservative pearl clutching that cultural norms shift over the years and some things just aren’t as funny or clever as they used to be (which is okay!) The people who complain the loudest about being cancelled usually aren’t cancelled they’re just unpopular … like Rob Schneider. |
Well because he’s not just kind of weird, he’s a really vicious racist! It’s off putting! The music doesn’t offend my ears! Also, the attitude “just turn it off if you don’t like it” is literally the thing conservatives complain about. |
So, you’d give bill Cosby a pass because he was such a comedic genius who redefined the sitcom? I used to love Louis CK but honestly all of his jokes about being a creep, jerking off too much, etc just suddenly weren’t as funny when you found out he was just describing his actual life and it’s not “haha listen to this exaggerated caricature of me” That said I saw a recent clip of him talking about the whole thing and his regrets, etc and I’d totally be interested in seeing him again. But if it turns out it’s still just him talking about his dick and jerking off I’ll pass |
I think a key thing about the way comedy has changed over the years is that if you put punch down, it’s usually not funny and has a pretty short shelf life. Punching up and being self deprecating is always funny and tends to age well. It’s been a long time since I watched a lot of Rodney Dangerfield but I remember his fat jokes as cartoonish - laughing about sort of imaginary people, like his caricature of his wife. Also he’s the definition of self deprecating, and his schtick was about being a goofy dope. I suspect he’d be fine today - probably would have a somewhat different routine but he’d adjust just fine. |
