Are they crazy in Florida?

Vaccinate your kids and stop trying to control what others do. I don't want the Republicans to control my health and body, so I won't attempt to control theirs.

I’m not quite in this camp but close to it. I don’t want my kids to go to school with unvaccinated children or share a doctor’s office with unvaccinated children (who are clearly eligible). On the other hand, if that’s really what they want, go forth and let’s see how it goes. I’m not their mom.

That's not how herd immunity works.

Of course it’s not. I never suggested that it was. I have no control over the actions of others, especially in a place a thousand miles away. I only can do what I can do.

Florida plans to become the first state to end all vaccine mandates, including for schoolchildren, rejecting a practice that public health experts have credited for decades with limiting the spread of infectious diseases.

Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo, the Florida surgeon general, made the announcement on Wednesday alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican. Mr. DeSantis rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic, and over time he has espoused increasingly anti-vaccine views.

“Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body?” Dr. Ladapo, a vocal denigrator of vaccines, said to applause during an event on Wednesday in Valrico, Fla., near Tampa. “Your body is a gift from God.”

He added that the administration would be “working to end” all vaccine mandates. “Every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery,” Dr. Ladapo said.

The state would be the first to scrap requirements that children be vaccinated to attend school, among other rules.

Dr. Ladapo should lose his medical license. "Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body?" Sir you are literally a doctor. Are you going to tell your patients to drink bleach?

+1

So should Bill Cassidy, the Senator/Doctor who voted to confirm RFK Jr, despite his clear misgivings which have come to pass in a way far worse than most of us envisioned.

Not fond of Cassidy but three other GOP Senators are doctors - Barbados, Marshall, and Paul - and voted for the lunatic as well. Cassidy was merely the only one who publicly toyed with possibly voting no.

Marshall just came out today and said he regrets his vote.

The one for the just-fired CDC Director, not the one for RFK Jr.

We are all so f___ed.

^^^ argh BARRASSO not Barbados, thanks autocorrect.

From the thread in the college forum:

“I have a family member whose Florida-based insurance (I think via FSU?) denied coverage last month for their four-year-old's regular vaccines.”

Yes, I had a friend in elementary school who wasn't vaccinated because she had leukemia and couldn't receive vaccines until she was finished with chemo. She got caught up on all vaccines after she was done.

Florida (which is where we grew up) would make kids like her a sitting duck.

Yep. Along with teachers with compromised immune systems and their family members. My first thought was Rubella. I hope there are plans in the Dept of Ed for children born exposed to rubella — among other diseases. Oh, that’s right, they’re planning to get rid of the Dept of Education.

But I thought the right wing of 2025 maintains that slavery provided much good.

Gosh. I just can’t keep up!

It will affect us all, vaccinated or not, FL or another state. Do you really think that if you are vaccinated you are 100% protected?

Does this include the Florida public universities as well? This may change our college list (to exclude all Florida schools.)

What do the residents of Florida think about all this? Especially the seniors.

We’re going to find out. Ladapo indicated that the legislature needs to get involved to fully deactivate all the requirements.

Of course it does.

And even if it did not do, you do not understand what herd immunity means???

Why are you looking at FL schools anyway?

Seriously, did you not read Project 2025???

Interestingly, Florida mandates vaccination of pets by law.

But not children.

+1. I won't move back to my home state, Texas, because I am not going to voluntarily move to a place that's already legislating against my civil rights as a woman.

Sad to say, other red states are likely to follow Florida on this.

Well they’re going to FAFO. We already had a measles epidemic that hit Texas, Oklahoma and a bunch of other “enlightened states” this summer. Wait till states start dealing with kids with polio and pregnant ladies with rubella. It’s sad that some people are trying to create such mistrust in our public health system.

Tells you something about Florida’s priorities. How did that state get so stupid?
