The money likely isn’t real (eg what they’re seeing in their accounts is just #’s they can’t withdraw, the scammers have already taken the money). We had something similar happen to an older couple we know.

I’d take this extremely seriously and report this to your local FBI branch / office, they’re the first stop for suspected crimes like this. You can stay anonymous if you’d like.

How do you know if you are buying it through a legit or scam website? How do people by Bitcoin?

If you don’t have experience buying via decentralized platforms, only use centralized platforms like Coinbase or Kraken that are 100% legitimate (and don’t move money from there into a no-name decentralized exchange). You can always transfer assets from Coinbase or Kraken to a physical hard wallet too (Ledger).

Crypto is a scam, period. But even if you assume some sort of crypto trading is good old speculative fun on an inherently worthless “asset”, you have to acknowledge the time, place, and manner of what your fellow parishioners are doing is ultra scammy.

The pastor knows what is going on and refuses to stop it. What other things is he allowing to happen in his flock? Child abuse? Spousal abuse? Embezzlement? The job of a pastor is to lead, and yours is straight letting his flock go astray. It’s time to either get a new church or get a new pastor.

At church, I might buy cookies or pastries at a bakery sale. I might buy a wreath or Xmas tree at Christmas. I might donate a little money to the church in December.

I would never buy anything else being sold at church.

The pastor doesn't understand Crypto anymore than any MLM scheme so he doesn't have an opinion. This couple is marketing it at their home bible study group meetings which is outside of church - but it's all church members. This couple moved to the area from out of state just a couple years ago and so they don't have much history. I googled them and they almost don't exist on the internet. It's not going to end well.

I would find another church ASAP.

This is textbook pump-and-dump. I agree with the PP who suggested notifying the FBI.

My father's house should be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.
