CMU vs W&L?

If he can handle the academics, then Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is the better choice for career placement between CMU & Wash & Lee.

1) CMU
2) Colgate
3) W&L

However, all 3 are excellent schools with very good job placement; the campus cultures do differ.

CMU offers far greater prestige, reputation, recognition and access. Not just at the national level but internationally as well. They have a global alumni in major cities particularly in tech and finance and ties to firms like Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, Amazon, etc. W&L’s network is just regional, strongest in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and South…

Colgate is a D1 sports school so I'm having trouble believing that OP's kid is really weighing D3 and D1 schools together if D1 is possibility. I'm also assuming if the kid is any good Colgate is offering some scholarship support. And if the kid is really a D1 prospect other patriot league teams would be in the mix as well. This is a long way of saying that this is a troll post.

It’s not a stretch to be a top CMU recruit and a bottom Patriot recruit. Also, outside of football and basketball, the scholarship money is scarce.

We aren’t talking Power 4 schools here.

Does DC plan to do anything with the sport professionally after college?

No one cares about Colgate.

If these are the schools they are looking at, I highly doubt it. Or if they think they are, they need to adjust expectations. Unless their name is Adonal Foyle (look him up).

OP wrote that her son is also being recruited by Colgate. I included Colgate to offer my opinion with respect to OP's son desired career placement.

W&L breeds a different type. As mentioned by another upthread who has hired W&L grads, W&L alums can appear arrogant in that their confidence is often overstated and condescending.

Yes, that's why they asked. Great input though.

PP had a brain fart and thought the option was W&M...those are the kids who PP thought were arrogant.

I know many W&L grads and they often do come across as arrogant & condescending.

The prior poster probably mistyped "W&M" when intending to write "W&L". I have never read or heard of William & Mary grads being described as arrogant, but have for many years experienced this arrogant quality with with Wash & Lee grads.

No...go read the thread. PP thought this was a choice between CMU and W&M. Admitted after the fact they misread it.

CMU is the better choice but also the harder one. Everyone (except the fine artists) is essentially in STEM at CMU, even the people in the arts and sciences school. If your kid is math-y and science-y it is the obvious choice. Otherwise, W&L is an excellent school with a more traditional experience. CMU's placement is a little better but not by much.

Where, realistically, would your kid's GPA be better?

Or, Colgate is recruiting poorly. Colgate should be competing for athletes against Patriot League schools, other midmajor DIs and aiming upward (Vandy, etc) depending on the sport. Their recruiting battles should not be with DIII schools
