Just hire lawn service after you replace the plants. Mark where you do not want them to edge/trim.

Ah this brings back memories. I am at best an indifferent gardener (and you have to squint to see the “at best” scenario). I planted some flowers several years ago. I routinely kill plants but these ones looked like they were settling in. DH weed whacked them. I was so mad. Fortunately they came back. They may be among the only things I planted that are still going strong. Still married. Also, grateful that DH will do some of the yard maintenance.

He needs to be stripped down in the shed, hands tied to the ceiling, and receive a good caning till he has problems sitting down for a week.
Unless he likes that kind of thing, then think of something else.

It happens. My lawn service yanked some of my perennials this year. annoying but so it goes.
