You're not funny.

Well, what else would you say WASP stands for, if not white anglo saxon protestant?

Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona...something inferable from "top LACs" in the title.

Those schools have a "thing"? Really?

Yes, they have for years.

Anonymous wrote:Oberlin is definitely worth a look, the college and conservatory programs are well-integrated and there’s a lot of crossover.

I’ve also heard St. Olaf, Bard, and Lawrence are known for strong orchestra programs.

Haverford is another liberal arts college with a strong music program (they have a joint orchestra with Bryn Mawr).

Anyone know about Bowdoin or Wesleyan orchestras?

Wesleyan's is much better than Bowdoin's, which is particularly bad. Rural Maine with a small student body isn't going to give you comprehensive talent.

Fwiw my the orchestra swayed my kid to Amherst over Bowdoin when they were effectively tied after visiting. Wesleyan wasn't on the list, but would have been if ED didn't work out.

How are you getting at the quality of these?

Um, ok? DP but I didn't know WASP meant anything other than "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant," honestly. Slow your roll.

Also, to answer the OPs question: Vanderbilt. Tons of the kids there are what I'll call "instrument adjacent." (Can I call that IA?)

When was this? We thought Bowdoin's orchestra was pretty good this year.

Bowdoin is a half-hour from Portland, Maine n a town of 22,000 people. Its location is not rural.

Did you get information on the 5 star consortium? They are all very close to each other - Amherst, Williams, Mt Holyoke, Hampshire and Smith. They also have 5 College Dance, a highly rated program. The two programs collaborate together yearly.

Oberlin is a terrific place for science majors with strong music interests. The chemistry department has a stellar record of student research, and math gets some v v strong majors thanks to the double degree BA/BM program…

If you want a good orchestra, you're going to need to expand your search beyond small liberal arts colleges. There just simply aren't enough students at them to support a top level orchestra, especially when half of them were recruited to play sports. Those kids didn't practice the cello or oboe for 1-3 hrs a day throughout childhood, which is what it takes to tackle the great orchestral works of the western tradition.

Just loud and wrong. There are various, named liberal arts colleges who have excellent orchestras that are full. People like you ruin dcum.

Trash consortium that is a great commute by bus, hardly used, and not worth it.

I know it’s not a LAC, but… thoughts on Brown’s orchestra? I know many at hyp are at a conservatory level. Is that also true at Brown?
