Oberlin is definitely worth a look, the college and conservatory programs are well-integrated and there’s a lot of crossover. I’ve also heard St. Olaf, Bard, and Lawrence are known for strong orchestra programs. Haverford is another liberal arts college with a strong music program (they have a joint orchestra with Bryn Mawr).
Anyone know about Bowdoin or Wesleyan orchestras?
Wesleyan's is much better than Bowdoin's, which is particularly bad. Rural Maine with a small student body isn't going to give you comprehensive talent.
Fwiw my the orchestra swayed my kid to Amherst over Bowdoin when they were effectively tied after visiting. Wesleyan wasn't on the list, but would have been if ED didn't work out.
Bowdoin is a half-hour from Portland, Maine n a town of 22,000 people. Its location is not rural.
