Stunningly Impressive BASIS College Results

So proud of these kids. Hard work paying off.

I can also say that that student had superior rigor in their coursework, even for a school that puts a high premium on APs, and SAT scores to match. A few other facts worth noting. Another student who is headed to an “elite” school is going as a Questbridge Scholar. Another student headed to UMD is the recipient of a coveted Banneker Key full ride scholarship. And if you saw the list of schools that got turned down by some kids, often for financial reasons, you would have to give this BASIS class even more flowers.

Totally accurate. My kid used to go to BASIS and stayed in touch with some of these former classmates. There are some incredibly hard working, smart students in this class and they earned this. Also some truly decent human beings who pursued interesting projects and made meaningful contributions. And their college acceptances reflect that. Several my DC knows well chose non-Ivy schools for better financial packages or a better fit in their major and for them that was absolutely the right move.

Kudos to all of them who worked so hard!

Looking just at where kids are going (vice the multiple choices they had), out of a class of 41 or so, I count: Harvard, Yale, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Dartmouth, 3-4 Univ of Penn, Navy Academy, Brown, and many more impressive schools.

While kids have always gotten into top schools from BASIS, it seems over one-quarter of this year’s class is going to an Ivy. I wonder why this year is so much more impressive than prior years? (A couple of years ago there was a thread about how unimpressive BASIS’ results were.)

This website says that BASIS DC has 233 high school students (~58 students/grade). I counted 6 Ivies posted on IG (~10% of the grade). Unless there are 15 BASIS students heading to Ivies this year, I don’t know how you arrived at a quarter of the class.

But still—Congrats to BASIS!

DP but that same website also said the 12th grade class is 42 students.

The class is 42. 6 Ivy's on the site now, which is about 15 percent of the grade. One more coming, which is just over 15 percent.

A quarter is an exaggeration, but I also get it, bc places like Naval Academy and McGill and full scholarship to Harvey Mudd are arguably just as competitive.

Naval Academy and McGill are not nearly as competitive as the Ivies. This comes from someone who has kids who applied to both these options.
Now a full ride to Harvey Mudd is awesome.

PP who is a BASIS senior parent. There are actually 46 students in the class of ‘25. Interesting that someone is just grasping for data to discount the achievements of the class. As a long time BASIS parent, I agree that the boosterism on this board is over the top, but the haters are really something.

Ok, so over 15 percent attending Ivys.

Plus another ~15 percent attending schools like Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Berkeley, Naval Academy, etc.

In addition, lots at strong schools like Wesleyan, Bryn M., U of Maryland, McGill, Tulane, etc.

Strong results all around.

So what’s the complaint about Basis again?

I think the only legit complaint is that it's a school with an advanced curriculum that is not appropriate for all students, and the students for whom it is inappropriate will feel seriously stressed and discouraged. (And that it has a bad building).

If you have a student who can handle the coursework, and you want to stay in public school in DC, it's crazy not to consider BASIS.

The complaint is that the building crushes souls and that the students won’t have a full enough high school experience and extra curriculars to be able to compete in college admissions - hmmmmm

Another complaint is that enrollment is only open at 5th grade through lottery. No incoming students beyond that grade with a strong student attrition in the following years.

If the DC charter board allowed them to give students a test before enrolling, they could accept kids at all years (like the other BASIS schools do)

You clearly don't know any of the juniors or seniors if you don't think they have a full enough high school experience with extra curriculars. It may not be the experience that you had, but these kids lead incredibly impressive busy lives.
