Why? We are a BASIS family and my kids have one T5 university parent, though the T5 is MIT which does not give legacies any weight. |
congrats but that’s way too small a graduating class to get excited about. |
the pettiness on this thread is something to behold.
reminder: you don't actually know where these kids are going to college, if they have a parent who went to the same college, if that college still has a legacy preference and if the kid wouldn't have gotten in but for that legacy preference. another reminder: these are children who probably worked their butts off, and you are a fully grown adult. try to be less shitty. |
Excellent results! Congratulations to all the BASIS seniors!

yay another basis thread |
Are you so petty you can’t celebrate these kids? If you are, you really can just keep scrolling. - not affiliated with BASIS |
The fact that it's such a small graduating class, and has so many top tier admittances is very impressive. (I'm not DCPS so I have no skin in the game). |
Legacy admissions still help a lot-with one study showing that they're 4x likelier to get in than applicants with the same test scores. (Spare me the anecdotes about Ivy Leaguer X's kid not getting in, it doesn't mean every legacy kid gets in, but it still helps, all else fixed). https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/upshot/ivy-league-legacy-admissions.html |
Legacy is a hook. Except MIT. |
Congrats to the seniors for their hard work and accomplishments! How is the climate and culture of the BASIS high school? |
From DCUM, I've learned that it's an excellent group of kids with top-notch teachers who provide a demanding but supporting environment in which they are well-prepared for college and life. Although it's a small school, there are a number of good extra-curriculars and even some great sports teams. And in senior year they have the opportunity to stretch academically and pre-professionally. To be fair, it's not perfect: The building is a little crowded. From DCUM, I've also learned it's a subpar experience in every way: The academics are both mediocre and soul-crushing test prep; the campus is a dark, crowded, depressing mess; the teachers are inexperienced and over their heads; the administration is completely unresponsive and incompetent; and the extracurriculars are virtually nonexistent, so if you want your children to do anything interesting, they have to go elsewhere. It's not a total failure: Some kids learn enough to do OK on a few AP tests. I'm a Basis HS parent; I'd say part 1 is about 75-80 percent accurate, and part 2 maybe 20-25 percent accurate. Overall, it's been a good experience for my child, especially compared to the other non-private DC options, but it does not suit every student. |
Totally proud of the kids. Well done kids. I find the parents who post about basis really annoying, though. You can’t tell me “stunningly impressive” didn’t make you cringe a bit? |
Well, of course it did. But, as an adult, I was able to put that aside in favor of congratulating the students. If I felt I couldn’t do that, I would have kept scrolling. |
Well then pat yourself on the back because you’re a better person than me! |
At least you know you are a bad person. Please make sure your children know so that we can avoid having more people in the world like you. |
