The Pope died this morning

I feel like God brought him back from the brink and gave him a bit more time to write that Easter message to the world. He wrote it with literally his dying breath. Will the world listen?

I don't either. Still, I'd like to see Vance spending more time with Trump.

So JD Vance pulled him from his deathbed so he could give the Easter mass ceremony, give Easter service and give blessings to the people in the Vatican Square in his popemobile? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Vance is garbage and the Pope should not have seen him.

Maybe if the pope had kept his nose out of our business focusing on religious issues instead of political he might have lived longer.

May his soul Rest In Peace.

I’m not Catholic, but I had such respect and even affection for Pope Francis. He seemed to genuinely care about not just humanity as a whole, but about the individuals that he encountered. He truly walked the walk.
Years ago, I saw a video where he was at some sort of formal event. A small child ran up to him on the dais, and he welcomed the child. The loving kindness of that moment just stuck with me.

Wishing his spirit eternal rest and peace. 🕊🪷🙏🏽✨

He wasn’t know for being friendly with children, as Pope John Paul was.

May he rest in peace with a heavenly reward, but this is a bit much unless you are too young to remember how beloved JPII was.

I’m mildly surprised at just how quiet the Catholic circles I run in are today. One person circulated a news link with crickets in response. Admittedly, I run in more observant Catholic circles where even Pope Francis stated he didn’t quite feel the love. But even my dear abuela who still attends daily Mass and others who are less hard line are also strangely quiet today. This is nothing like JPII or even Ratzinger stepping down.

I always thought it said something that there seemed to be two generations worth of countless devout Catholic families with at least one son named JP or John Paul or (my favorite) JuanPi in the English/Spanish speaking world clearly inspired to honor JPII but “Francis” never did quite take off either in the English or Spanish speaking world.

The majority of Catholic families I knew growing up had a framed picture of Pope John Paul II on their wall.

I'm Catholic and I liked Pope Francis very much. I'm curious to see who will follow.

That’s a good example. True in my extended family, too.

I noticed it at my kids’ schools. 4 different Catholic schools during the Francis pontificate. All of course displayed a picture of PF in their atrium. But 3 of the principals and countless teachers kept framed pictures of JPII up in their offices/desks. Never saw a PF picture in the school other than the main one in the atrium.

Same. PF was never “a man of the people” the way Pope John Paul II was.

I have a small mass card with Pope Francis' picture on it. It will now have a prominent spot stuck on our bedroom mirror.

Here is another take on that. Almost every day until his death, Pope Francis had a call with Holy Family Church in Gaza, the only Catholic church there which counts about 1000 parishioners, since the bombing of Gaza began. He spoke not only with the priest, but various parishioners and their children.

There are numerous stories on line. A friend sent me this one, which unattributed:

Pope made daily calls to this Gaza church even as his health waned

Despite failing health over the past year, Pope Francis’s daily work schedule included a video call with the parishioners of a church in Gaza. Those parishioners mourned the pope on Monday.
“The news came as a surprise, because Pope Francis was deeply beloved and so close to the Christian community in Gaza” said Rev. Gabriel Romanelli of Gaza’s Holy Family Church.

In January, it was revealed that Francis would hold a nightly audience over video chat with Gaza’s only Catholic parish. The church-owned Vatican News reported that the Pope started making the call two days after the start of the war in October 2023.

Video shared by the outlet showed people in Gaza speaking to Francis in his native Spanish. Romanelli said the Pope would call daily, adding that it would sometimes take three to four hours for the calls to get through “but he never gave up until he reached us and delivered his message.” The Pope’s last call was on Saturday, he said, adding that “he asked for our prayers, gave us his blessing, and thanked us for our commitment to peace.” A photo of Francis is placed near the church’s altar.

Francis’s absence was also felt in the West Bank. Rev. Rami Askarieh of Bethlehem hailed Francis’ piety and humility. He said he was shocked to learn of his passing. “He was in the hospital, but when he appeared in public yesterday we all said ‘Thank God,'” he said over the phone. He didn’t believe it at first when people were suddenly saying the pope died on Monday, he said.

A mass is scheduled in honor of Francis this Wednesday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem under the auspices of Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. In a video statement, Pizzaballa said the Pope kept in close contact with him in the last year due to the situation in Gaza and to “express his concern and also his solidarity.”

The little boy will remember that forever.

I am not a believer, but this is heartwarming.

My condolences to those grieving this loss.

It made me cry. Sad that the world has lost a good man.

My adult kids are in the baby-having years and I’ve met a number of their friends who have children named Francis/Frances. It might be younger Catholic families than are running in your circles.
