The Pope died this morning

I’m not Catholic, I’m a gay Episcopalian but this is still a sad day.

Straight Episcopalian here and I feel the same way. I love that he was a champion of the poor and a ray of light. I hope the next Pope is not a hardliner. May he rest in peace.

Devout catholic here and I agree with you. The world needed his voice and leadership. To anyone who believes he wasn’t progressive enough, try to understand the confines in which he worked. He was a revolutionary and he will be missed.

+1 a decent man, who displayed humility and compassion toward others. Impressive steps forward under his guidance. Afraid of what comes next.

Dies hours after meeting JD Vance. I don’t believe in coincidences.

Shocking. He was doing better.

I am an atheist/lapsed Unitarian, and this is so sad to hear. He seemed like a genuine and fundamentally good person.

I hear the complaints that he didn’t do enough, but he was working within a strict and complex system, and always seemed to be doing his best to nudge people in the direction of kindness. Change is hard, and I think he was using a gentle, incremental approach to try to keep the pendulum from swinging back and prevent a reactionary backlash. Oddly, I think about the pope sometimes when I am trying to effect cultural changes in my division at work.

Very sad to hear. I hope that he did not suffer.

I pray that this is not the case.

RIP- agree he was moving the Church in a better direction. IMO he was very brave to take on so many long standing bigotries within the Church.

+1 Right? Heaven forbid we have tolerance and compassion towards others as an ideal. Jesus believed all were equal and loved by God, too bad people like PP don’t follow his example.

Yes, his soul needs our prayers.

Hopefully his replacement will be the result of a fair and honest election.

So, Vance pulled him from his deathbed for a photo op - what a lowlife. I could not be more disgusted. I hope the pope gave him some wise words before he went on his way. May Francis rest in peace and guide us from heaven.

He seems to have been the kindest most beloved pope of my lifetime. May he rest in peace.
