May he rest in peace with a heavenly reward, but this is a bit much unless you are too young to remember how beloved JPII was.

I’m mildly surprised at just how quiet the Catholic circles I run in are today.   One person circulated a news link with crickets in response. Admittedly, I run in more observant Catholic circles where even Pope Francis stated he didn’t quite feel the love. But even my dear abuela who still attends daily Mass and others who are less hard line are also strangely quiet today. This is nothing like JPII or even Ratzinger stepping down.

I always thought it said something that there seemed to be two generations worth of countless devout Catholic families with at least one son named JP or John Paul or (my favorite) JuanPi in the English/Spanish speaking world clearly inspired to honor JPII but “Francis” never did quite take off either in the English or Spanish speaking world. My adult kids are in the baby-having years and I’ve met a number of their friends who have children named Francis/Frances. It might be younger Catholic families than are running in your circles.
