Why the hate for Boston College?

I think this hate is mostly from Emory/WUSTL parents who are nervous that there is not much that distinguishes #20 on USNWR and #40.

BC will never be ranked higher than WUSTL and Emory. Their alums and parents are not at all worried, and the gap between 20 and 40 in USNWR is massive. People with great academic credentials do not pay BC much mind.

Have you ever spoken to one of these “the gap between 20 and 40 is massive” people in real life? They are either your kind of people or they are people you leave parties to avoid. Whenever I read a post like this, I conjure up a mental image and just roll my eyes.

This particular poster has a huge … crush … on WUSTL and Vandy and he goes to insane lengths to create/make up huge gaps and fake comparisons/differences between his favorite schools and a particular “other” school. So, yes, indeed.

Classic, "You weren't that good anyway"

Students admitted to T25 schools and waitlisted by BC for yield protection do not have regrets about BC's decision. Nice job tying in BC with UChicago, I am sure everyone equates them as comparable schools now.

Ambitious students and involved parents have these conversations. If you have a high SAT and GPA you do not want BC and it is a safety or low target.

We're a full pay family. Will pay full fare at a T5. I would have paid full fare for some schools we toured. But BC was just the line for me.

You go half a step "down" or at least adjacent and you get merit. Sometimes really hefty merit. So you have to draw the "not worth it" line somewhere and for us it was BC. Possibly because it's a school with a lot of kids who look like our HS crowd. It's nice, but just more of the same.

400k to live in an okay suburb at a barely T40 school is financially reckless, unless you have enough money that you could and should be buying your way into a T25 anyway.

I have a huge crush on T25 schools when they are dragged in the mud by BC, which does not belong in the same paragraph as them. BC is not elite. It is for okay but unexceptional students from New England.

Not worth 90k a year.

USC and NYU are significantly better than those other schools and require a better applicant profile.

Nope. Applicant profile are at the same level in general especially NYU except for Stern.

Dream on. People go to jail to get their children into USC. People on DCUM run for the hills before paying 90k a year for mediocrity.

My kids (sr and jr) really liked it when we visited. They are very smart but fairly "basic" kids.
Two negatives
1)Price. There is no way we can justify $90K (or it is $95K?).
2)They definitely yield protect. At our private this year they took 3.6 kids and waitlisted the 3.8s and 3.9s.

MIT used to be a vocational school.
C, BU, and NU have a great history of serving working class and common people in this country.
That is a proud history opposed to the schools that were like country clubs for rich Whites.

One of academia's great and true mysteries. Just can't wrap my head around it.

Perfect example of the "make up sh$t" option used by the BC hate pp (who is singularly responsible for nearly every negative response on this thread). Literally inventing bs that he needs to "respond" to.

Most T25 schools don't have a history of serving the common people with average SAT scores and it shows in their ranking and the high regard academia has for those institutions. I'd rather be in a country club for rich people than a working class school.
