Why the hate for Boston College?

Anonymous
DD was accepted. We toured - nice campus. She met several current students who were very nice and shared the good and bad. Boston is a fun city, a 15 minute uber ride so not too bad. No Greek life which she liked. Lots of clubs, met a few professors in her major who showed a lot of enthusiasm for their classes.
Is it because many of the kids are wealthy? We toured a few other schools and did notice a difference in the student body by the way they dressed and a certain type of confidence that only moeny can buy, but we did meet many down-to-earth kids so don't think it would be terrible. We are solid middle-class. Went to a local admitted student event and pretty much everyone there was from a private school so a little worried that my public school kid wont fit in.

Maybe because not a lot of kids get into it from this area? Our family loves BC as well – excellent school that also has great school spirit/athletic events.

There are some vocal haters for the highly selective semi-elite private schools especially like USC, NYU, BU, BC, NU, Tufts
Anonymous
Because it pretends to be elite but isn't but the rich can buy in.

This.

They are all greats schools to attend, BC included.

BC, BU and Northeasten are in the 40-50 ranking not sure if they qualify as semi-elite. USC would ve semi-elite.

It is an extremely expensive school. So it shows up in a lot of discussions of schools that aren't worth it. But it is a very good school.

Semantics I guess, but what would you call 40-50 out of 4,000 colleges? Top 1%?

They are all hard to get into (<15% acceptance rate, etc).

People on DCUM will have their favorites and bash many schools, but the numbers are the numbers.

Good school but not elite. Comparable to Wake Forest.

Why do you think you are the arbiter of what is and is not elite?

I think this hate is mostly from Emory/WUSTL parents who are nervous that there is not much that distinguishes #20 on USNWR and #40.

BC, BU, NEU all decent but nothing special similar to Villanova and GW.

I dont think it's the school or student body people have an issue with. Rather the boosters.
Anonymous
^agree boosters inflate the school’ s reputation.
