maybe this was the plan?

This seems likely. They weren't sure how yield would go, so admitted fewer, with a plan to go to the waitlist.

Last year (class of 2028) Brown admitted 2521 kids between ED and RD (898 + 1623).
This year (2029) they admitted 2417 kids between ED and RD (906 + 1511).

So last year the admitted 104 more kids prior to even going to the waitlist.
Then last year they took 118 off the waitlist.

So for whatever reason they appear to have chosen to under admit this year and use the waitlist.

For whatever reason? Seems like they are trying to juke the stats -- keep acceptedance % down and yield up.

I think it was a rumor.
Brown was real though:

Wow is it normal for the UCLA (and other UC schools) to move before May 1?

There's a good thread on "Why are WL moving early this year" on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/1k1vf4q/why_are_schools_accepting_off_the_waitlist_so/

Indicating the early movement is due to:
- Internationals being scared off
- The shotgunning of 15+ schools leaves many holes
- Overenrollment in the past few years has led many schools to under admit in RD so they have better control over yield

The Reddit thread also says in addition to brown, nyu etc, Cornell and uchicago have moved too.

These schools under admitted this year. For example, Brown admitted 100+ less than last year. They are clearly trying to get yield up (because yield is keep to rankings.)

The waitlist "movement" has been super small at these schools. Like 5 kids. It's not droves.

More out of state kids got off the UCLA waitlist again today
