How is UVA overrated?

Please give me evidence that shows that UNC is "a tier above" UVA.

I would welcome it.

I would like evidence not just "because I say so."

I have been pouring over the internet looking for concrete reasons to choose one school over the other.

It just has a better reputation. You can see glimpses of this through things like their admit rate (lower than UVA), but this has always been the case.

They are the same tier for undergraduate.

Unc is respected more and has better undergrad programs. All uva has is law school and graduate business school but nobody wants to get an MBA so who cares.

Besides, the place is not safe.

For one, test scores and percent submitting.

UNC: 1470 Median, 70% submitting
UVA: 1470 Median, 60% submitting
which is on par with
W&M: 1470 Median, 60% submitting

Lots of classes taught by grad students.
DD is a 1st Yr and hasn't had a single class taught by a TA. They lead discussion sections for large classes, offer study sessions, proctor and grade exams. But, professors teach the classes and have been easy to communicate with via office hours or email. Flame UVA all you want, but at least post the truth for people genuinely doing their research.

Same is true for my first year student.

Sure. That’s why it receives 10s of thousands of out of state applications per year.

So does auburn. Who cares?

My response was to the previous post. Idiot.

Yeah…the point is that many schools gets thousands of out of state applications. Is ASU now some important dream school, because tens of thousands of people apply oos

There are posters who I genuinely think have "UVA posts on DCUM" as an alert on their phone. They jump on here in 2 seconds flat to disparage the place and to say why their kid would never attend.

My child is choosing between UVA and another top 25 school and is 99% sure they're headed to UVA. They are a super smart kid with top grades from a rigorous private and an almost perfect SAT. They want the balance of strong academics but a genuinely fun and very social college experience that a place like UVA provides. We know at least a dozen other kids who are like mine who are also headed to UVA (across the various public and private kids we know) and also another dozen who are there and are really, really happy

This is all true. My kid is going in the Fall and while they could have chosen an Ivy, they picked UVA for the social environment it offers and less pressure-cooker feel than an Ivy. They want strong academics but also want a typical college experience. Also way less expensive (in-state). Very happy with their decision.

Congrats to your kid - many students there chose UVA for similar reasons, and so many of them also had many other desirable options. Mine is a first year and she loves it for all the reasons you list. I'm confident your kid will be happy there. Wahoowa!

UVA is far more similar to UNC.

Well UNC is also overrated.

No, it isn't.

They don't have a lazy river and the climbing walls are subpar. It should be excluded specifically from consideration for those criteria alone. Kidding.

That's misleading since UVA is way better than either of those schools.

By what metric? # of racist mobs per decade or? Because it's not test scores.

One of my housemates at UVA's dad was a professor at UNC. They chose UVA over a free ride at UNC just because they believes it was so much better.
