Can you understand that others are not interested in your worldview? Your belief does not affect how others think or act. With this forum though, it's kind of amazing that people post ABOUT atheists, and then get offended when atheists post. |
OK but what about the questions like the one about helping kids sit through church where the atheists came in and just hijacked the thread with many (now deleted) posts that were simply attacking the OP and anyone who had the nerve to think that it was a good idea to have their children in church? I don't attack atheists - friends or here - who think it's a good idea to teach their kids that God doesn't exist. It don't attack my Jewish friends for taking their kids to synagogue. I don't attack Muslim friends for taking their kids to the mosque. This is what posters are so frustrated with. It's the non sequitur where somehow the minute it's Jesus we get "fairy tales, bronze aged god, blah blah blah." As someone upthread said, it's almost like the Bible passage about him being a stumbling block is true or something ![]() |
DP There is no scientific evidence for GOD but science studies the natural world. If GOD exists beyond nature, demanding lab proof is like demanding a microscope detect sarcasm. Science and theology ask different questions. Conflating them is a category error. |
Jews aren't going around sharing our "good news" and then getting offended people find us irritating about it. Instead Jews are attacked for wanting to exist. We're told the only country on earth that is a Jewish nation should suicide itself and that every person who lives there is a "colonizer" who deserves what happened on Oct 7. We're not allowed to have nuanced views on Israel - not here anyway. Not without being shouted over and violently insulted. So you know what we learn to do? TALK ABOUT IT ELSEWHERE. This is not the forum where Jews can talk to each other about the complicated thing of being Jewish in today's world. We find other forums - in person, online - where we aren't constantly intruded on by people who hate that we even exist (then deny hating that we even exist, then that's a whole ugly, endless conversation, too). You will excuse me for not shedding too many tears over the complaints you are expressing, which sound so freaking trivial you cannot even believe it. Just listen to yourself. Take a look around at what's happening in this country in the name of your g_d. See if you can develop the slightest bit of self-awareness and empathy, while also bemoaning other people's lack of interest in your "good news." |
I'm not the poster who brought up good news. I'm just irritated that people can't ask a reasonable question and get a reasonable answer. I know it's DCUM and maybe that's ridiculous. I don't ask questions about Christianity here because I have better places to ask them, but when people do it would be nice to have a calm conversation for once. And yes, I fully realize that what happens here is nothing, nothing on the hate you experience. |
Friend, we can't even have a conversation about sandals in the beauty and fashion forum without it devolving into nuclear war. DCUM is what it is. An engrossing, maddening, funny, weird free anonymous online forum where people come to insult each other and sometimes be helpful. |
I like the beauty forum too, but the sandals that you are referencing were truly hideous ![]() |
- Asking for evidence, scientific or otherwise - if God interacts with the natural world then by definition it can be detected. If he does not interact with the natural world then why do we care or how do we even know he is real? - Your claim that "Science and theology ask different questions. Conflating them is a category error" is called "special pleading" and weakens your position more than any other. All we are asking is the same type of justification for your belief as we all have (including YOU) for every other belief we hold. |
True. |
As a PP stated, there are so many places specifically to discuss your christian faith with other christians, so perhaps one of them might be a better fit. In addition, one of the reasons atheists seem to "target" christianity is that there is very real harm being done in this country by christians. And in actuality, the christian fundamentalists are the ones that actually follow the bible you all claim to believe in. Believers in more "moderate" forms of christianity that don't take the Bible literally are still doing harm as they are inadvertently providing legitimacy to those that wish to use the Bible to do real harm. That is why many atheists leave the jewish faith alone, for example. They leave others alone. At least in this county. |
Keep reporting the posts that hijack or attack. It's an open, online forum. You could create subforums for every belief system and you would still get people posting crap. |
You know neither Christianity nor history if you don't understand that freedom of religion is an idea that came out of the Reformation (very, very slowly). Just because there are Christians whose bad theology - yes, even if they claim to be following the Bible it's bad theology - leads them to a really twisted nationalism, that doesn't make them right or within the doctrinal statements of their denominations. For example when I was in college the conservative Presbyterians were absolutely censuring one branch of the crazy predecessors of today's Christian nationalists (the theonomists) for twisting the faith beyond recognition. |
I'm wearing them right now! How's THAT for hostile!! |
Yes, those sandals wouldn’t make even Frankenstein look sexy. And some people have ugly feet and ought never to wear sandals. I think there is a commandment “Thou shalt not bare thy feet if ugly” somewhere. |
The sun gives light to everyone. What you do with that light is up to you. |
