We really, really wanted to like Cornell as there was a major that my DC was interested in but it was just such a disappointment in these other ways. Your impression mileage may completely vary but we literally visited a second time to see if our impressions were wrong on trip number one.

Funny I found Emory depressing. Beautiful campus, but kids were mostly walking by themselves and not smiling. Very very quiet campus. At least Cornell has robust Ivy League sports.

But neither of us or our kids are making this decision. Cornell wins in prestige, but schools are close enough that kid should pick which he/she likes best

Debatable, especially for this major.

Emory has a niche, just like Cornell.

Can people with kids currently at Cornell verify whether this is true? Our sense is that Cornell is where fun goes to die … which makes DC reluctant to apply, even though they have the stats and their HS is a strong feeder. Thx.

Literally just had dinner with a Cornell grad last week, she said she had to glaze over lifeless bodies when walking over bridges. Mental health is bad their and hasn't improved much.

Emory definitely has that reputation much more than Cornell.

Emory is 9th for happiest students.

NOT DEBATABLE. My god…people please…..unless you are an Emory Mom here or live in that little section of ATL of the east coast Cornell 100% has on the PRESTIGE dpt and it is NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Alumni network is one of the largest in the Ivy League. Emory is a nothing burger in comparison.

Get out of the east coast and all of a sudden people will ask what is Emory?….this will NEVER happen with Cornell anywhere in the world.

Please STOP THE MADNESS.

Emory mom is back. Look at the timestamp here it’s all the same person. This is crazy.

No one said Emery is a bad school. It’s great for the right person. But socially? That’s the point right? Greek life is dead. People go out in Atlanta with random 25 and 30-year-olds, rather than hanging out together.

If you have a kid who’s thinking about going to school there have them visit and go out with kids their own age and ask them directly. They might love it!!

Don’t listen to Emory mom!!

Sorry I raised your blood pressure, but notice how, Emory didn't offer any scholarships, and Cornell gave direct admission and not transfer option/WL. Also social prestige has little to do with academic prestige, as OP is trying to get into medical school and one would think an "ivy" could do a bit better than 75%. But again Cornell is clearly the weakest Ivy and no different than Emory, Vandy, WashU, etc . For premed Emory is the better school, in the better city, with the better opportunities, and the better placement, and frankly a more attractive student body...Thats the nothing burger.

Emory mom has a point, 75% is lackluster. Cornell wouldn't be elite without the Ivy tag on it, and I would rather be in Atlanta.
Also, I went to another Ivy so no allegiance in this fight.

It depends on if your kid wants from a college campus experience or not Emory is great for Atlanta but doesn’t have the parties and collegiate atmosphere that most kids want.

Most kids are used to dumpy downtown college towns.

My Cornell freshman had a rocky start first semester but absolutely loves loves the school now. Has amazing friends, challenging classes, unreal activities and a very very active social life.

Do an overnight in both places - if your kid is focused on social fit. Have kid reach out to kids they know on campus.

Only kids that I guess decide to attend college in dumpy college towns.

I don't know Ithaca, but none of my kids nor their friends had any interest in attending college in a dumpy town. Kind of a strange comment to make when there are so many colleges in cool towns and cities from which to choose.

Oh my. You Emory folks are hopeless. Go ahead and continue in your own little pretend bubble…..

None of this banter is very becoming of Emory or Cornell. Hard to understand why it stirs such strong emotion?

I think you're just disillusioned by the changing college landscape. The administration is sour on ivys, the media is too, and now employers are changing their tune. The lower ivys Cornell and Dartmouth are vulnerable. Emory already has better premed placement and has pretty much closed the gap for finance placement as well. Cornell ranked 15 per capita, vs Emory's 18.

In my mind, if you are using college transitions blog for your argument, you’re losing. No direct interest in either school.
