Exhausting To Pretend I’m Poor

When the exhaustion becomes too much, take a mid-day rest on the fainting couch. If you do not proactively rest, you will need your chamber maid to bring the smell salts.

It’s perfectly fine for people to talk about how bad their finances are, but people definitely hold it against you if you are doing well. I don’t have a car payments, bought them with cash. No debt other than mortgage and my parents and in-laws regularly give us money. It’s really annoying to pretend like I have a car payment and credit card debt, and struggling to pay my mortgage. Does anyone else have any tips on how I can be more convincing at pretending like I am struggling financially?

I fail to understand how you would ever be in any sort of situation where you might discuss these sort of matters.

Sounds like you have a crappy job and only work it because you get handouts from your parents.

Why are your parents and in-laws giving you money? You sound as if you don't need their help so refuse it or give it back. Don't be greedy OP.

She does need it. That's the point. But she thinks that she deserves it and no one else does. Hence this super tone deaf post.

Tell the truth: "Talking about money stresses me out. I can't deal with that at work."

The correct thing to do in this situation is to become a union organizer and get your colleagues higher pay, because you don't need this job to live and can endure retaliation.

+1 And you know what’s more exhausting than pretending you’re poor? Actually being poor.

Somehow I don’t think pretending to be poor is more exhausting than being poor. If you really think pretending is so terrible, feel free to give your money away - problem solved.

This is so bizarre. I’m not rich (nor poor), but I don’t have any debt besides my mortgage and also buy my cars in cash. I don’t think this is quite the flex you think it is? Who cares if you don’t have a car note or thousands in credit card bills?

Just don’t act smug about your money because most people don’t have mommy and daddy giving them $$$ every month like you, we have to earn it ourselves

Get some perspective, for one. This is not a problem.
Second, I have a hard time believing you really need to pretend to be poor. Can’t you choose to not discuss your financial situation like most normal people do?

Uh yeah. We have more money than we know what to do with and no one has ever asked us anything related to our finances. Just don't talk about it if you don't want to.

Nobody has ever asked me about any of this. Also debt free. But I would definitely judge a middle aged person getting parental help as an adult. It's infantilizing. I would judge that more than someone on their own struggling to pay bills and doing the best they can.

Maybe just don't talk and listen more. No one will find out that you are rich.
