Exhausting To Pretend I’m Poor

Exactly! Who discusses the details of car loan payments at work?

OP, there are a thousand empathetic background noise to make.

- Yeah, it's been tough all around.
- I know, we're always keeping an eye on things, too.
- The economy has been terrible.
- It's hard to have make these choices.
et al

The one thing I can see tripping you up is going into detail about vacations, because those actually are common to talk about at work. You just have to develop the habit of not being someone who talks about her vacations. That takes some forethought, but good heavens, discussing your car payment (or lack thereof) at work? Gauche.

Oh no! Poor OP. Life must be so hard for her.

This has GOT to be a troll!!!

Car payment and other debt doesn't mean someone is poor. I borrow at 4% and make 20-100% a year returns. I do have a car payment, but it has 0% interest. I do wish I hadn't put 50% down, but I didn't feel like driving away with two cars.
In-laws having to give you money says that you don't have enough money of your own.
This buying 'car cash' and thinking you are doing well, is very middle class thing.
Where do you work where people discuss it all?

When people talk about things they are struggling with that I'm not (money, marriage, etc) I either stay quiet or keep the focus on their issues. I have no idea why you feel the need to lie.

Don't hang out with poor people and then this won't be an issue.

Where do you work that everyone in your office is poor?

Do you have a hobby retail job or something? How is it that everyone at your workplace is drowning and you are the only one swimming splendidly?

Do not discuss finances at the office. I know a manager who remembers all these things and come raise and bonus time is all "well he has a rich wife so they don't need this raise" and then the good worker who may or may not have family money ends up feeling undervalued and leaves. Ugh.

Get a better job? Yours must not pay well. No one at my job talks like this.

I disagree with the posters saying never discuss finances at work - I learned so much about personal finance from an old boss who non-judgmentally explained his approach (essentially the bogleheads approach fwiw). Just don’t be a braggy a-hole about your good fortune OP and you will be fine.

Just tell them to ask their parents for money like you do.

Why are you so fake? What a fraud.

agree. I've never discussed finances with a coworker. And its no brag that I don't have a car payment on a 2015 toyota...
