I don't understand. Why wouldn't you want them to "double down" on the right call? The more recent forecasts show precipitation and colder temperatures starting later. The roads will be fine for elementary school kids.

Snow isn't accumulating until 5pm according to most recent models. It's plenty of time for even tier 2 elementary buses to drop off kids in their neighborhoods.

The call today is reasonable, with flexibility requested of parents who use aftercare.

Here is the relevant portion of the email:



MCPS schools will remain open for the full school day with a normal dismissal time on Tuesday, February 11.

School and community-use activities for the afternoon and evening are canceled, including field trips, games, team practices, and programs in schools and on school grounds.

After-school childcare operates, but families are encouraged to pick up their children as soon as possible. Families are strongly encouraged to contact their childcare provider for specific information.

Did their lawyers approve that? This has nothing to do with my driving, but to your point of driving below the speed limit, that only controls for you and not all the idiots around you who do not do so (and around here there are many). But this mainly has to do with MCPS sending out messages talking about limited visibility and buses driving slowly in a legal climate where you have to put labels on a hair dryer that it shouldn't be used in the shower. There is a reason these have previously been more carefully worded, because the more blather and shooting from the hip you do, the more rope you give to hang yourself if something happens. It will probably turn out just fine, but this is adding to my concerns about processes and consistency from the new regime and only thinking things 85% of the way through before spouting off.

Again, do better. Don't be one of those people who tries to use a hair dryer in the shower. And don't be someone that assumes you can still drive 10 mph over the speed limit as long as things aren't shut down.

Bus and car accidents can happen on any day. The last serious accident involving an MCPS bus was in September. The safest thing would be for MCPS to stop providing bus service.

Yep. they don't have a lawyer it reads from that message. Cautious, overly caution and now the opposite because of fear of having to be in school until Fourth of July.
