Eight Top 300 finalists this year as opposed to seven last year. But I thought that the new admissions process was leaving top talent behind?

No other FCPS school produced a top 300 finalist this year...
TJ will soon be back at #1.

No. There were more SOL failures in 2022-23 than the year prior, so the next ranking may well be lower.

Jeez, now we're maligning the class of 2025?

I mean the class of 2026.

Honestly I think the student body is improving. I don't know if they are easing off the "experience factors" or if students are self selecting themselves into the applicant pool better this year.

Improving? SOLs are worse, Ranking fell from 1st to 14th

False. TJ was #5 before moving to #14.

Of course, #1 to #5, and now #14, the downward trend is clear. This year is expected to be even worse, which is why FCPS is taking proactive steps by announcing admin level changes.

Depends on student and family interests, whether they prefer the academically top ranked Langley, Oakton, McLean, .... or prefer the athletically top ranked Mt. Vernon, Justice, Edison. FCPS offers wide variety of schools, not all can be the same and they dont want to make them the same. And students at one school are not forcing the students at another school to change interests.

Mt. Vernon and Justice are very poorly rated in athletics, and Edison is considered mediocre at best.

Try again.

PP doesn't actually mean athletics. It's a dog whistle.

#5 was using data from before the admissions change.

No trend.

People are also fond of forgetting that TJ’s USNWR ranking was frequently in the teens under Dr. Glazer and returned to #1 for several consecutive years under Dr. Bonitatibus.

But that’s inconvenient to the narrative so 💤

Glazer took over as principal in 2007 and witnessed the lowest rating in the school’s history. #20 in I believe 2012 or 13.

It proves that a growing number of students are competing for one of the nation’s top high school science prizes.

It puts a pretty sizeable dent into the narrative that TJ is somehow collapsing under the weight of the new admissions process.

Not really, when the only way to show diversity is by lowering standards and loading up the class with minimum math students, and facilitating remedial classes for them. Externally, the decline is visible with the drop in SOL scores and ranking from 1st to 14th and further expected.

Potomac School which is a small independent school produced 3 this year. Averages two every year.

Class of 2025 is the first to graduated under the new admissions policy.

I expect a mixed outcome, worse than class of 2024.

Around 50% of the class will get into schools like that of class of 2024.

But the bottom half of the class is going to be screwed due to bad grades, less academic rigor

Some of us have worked hard to sew that false narrative in the hope of returning to a more gameable process.

These rankings always trail reality. The lack of diversity hurt TJ up until they fixed the process.
