Was Carter the most recent president to have sent his child to attend DCPS?

Johnson's daughters graduated from Murch (DCPS) before they went to NCS.

They never attended public schools back in their respective states.

Chelsea attended public school all the way thru in Little Rock before she went to Sidwell

The Bush twins were in college when their dad won but they went to public high school

The Bush girls were def kindergarteners at Horace Mann (the public elementary in DC not the private in NYC) bc the family was living in DC. I was their lunch aid as a 5th or 6th grader. Barbara used to come to the school and help us plant the garden.

GHWB lived in Spring Valley (married to Barbara). The twins are the grandchildren. Maybe GWB and his siblings went to Mann?

Where did Ford’s kids go to school?

MacArthur ES
George Washington MS
TC Williams HS

We live two blocks from his old house and our kids went to the same schools -- the horror!!!!

BS.

The presidents' decisions were not driven by the SS. They were driven by privilege and hypocrisy.

On a related note, when was the last time we had non-legacy, multi-generational wealth presidents?

Who in their right minds with any kind of money would send their kids to DCPS?

Are you thinking of Marvin's kids? The Bush twins never went to DCPS, not when their grandfather was president or when their father was president.

Obama, Biden, Clinton

And Reagan and most of the Reps before him, including Ford and Nixon and Eisenhower. FDR was from multigenerational wealth. Hoover was self-made. So was Coolidge. Taft and Theodore Roosevelt were from wealthy families.

My understanding is that at Stevens, Amy was not allowed to play outside because there was no way to secure the playground. That sounds pretty miserable for a kid. And frankly, the risk would be significantly higher now. I would judge a president who chose to put their kid at risk in that way. Eventually she moved on to Hardy which was out of bounds, but easier to secure, but I'm still not convinced it was the best choice.

I admire the choice. I disagree that it meant he didn't put her first: Being a POTUS kid means huge advantages your entire life no matter where you went to school. And she was not at risk with security. I think it's an amazing message to give to people: I'm no better than you, and your kids matter as much as my kid. Here is a very nice article about it: https://wtop.com/dc/2017/08/flashback-1970s-amy-carter-dc-public-schools/

That's a wonderful article - thanks for linking, PP!

This was late 80's so maybe around the time their grandfather was elected. It was Barbara and Jenna. Might have been brief, but they were there. I was an older student at the same time and there were like than 200 kids in the whole school.

^^me again. Just found this on Wikipedia: Bush and his family moved to Washington, D.C., in 1988 to work on his father's campaign for the U.S. presidency.[51][52] He was a campaign advisor and liaison to the media, and assisted his father by campaigning across the country.

What an odd question. Literally the president right now fits this category.

I remember this because one of his DUIs was in DC IIRC.
