Was Carter the most recent president to have sent his child to attend DCPS?

Johnson's daughter went to NCS and came back and gave a long speech about how much she hated it and had to go to Saturday detentions.

I know that GHWB's VP Quayle sent his kids to public school because I went to elementary school with his daughter Corinne in McLean.

Secret Service attended with Amy too, but the amount of Secret Service support is higher now.

Sidwell and SAES both have schools with larger campuses where playgrounds and playing fields are more interior and further from the street, rather than separated from the sidewalk by a chain link fence. They aren't surrounded by taller buildings where a sniper could get access. Sidwell, at least, has drop off/pick up on a driveway that's more to the center of campus where access can be controlled.

Both schools also have control of who enrolls. A terrorist can't just rent an apartment in bounds with the plan of enrolling their own kid to get access to the campus.

I wouldn't want my own kid on an unsecurable playground with a kid who could attract the attention of a sniper, or someone who wants to drive through the perimeter fence in an SUV with a bomb.

I saw a clip on TikTok recently about Ana Gasteyer (from SNL) talking about how she was good friends with Amy Carter while in middle school. She was hanging around with her at Camp David during the famous Camp David Accords. Definitely an interesting perspective!

Secret service won't allow it. I heard Amy Carter was not allowed to play on the playground because of security concerns.

They never attended public schools back in their respective states.

Chelsea attended public school all the way thru in Little Rock before she went to Sidwell

The Bush twins were in college when their dad won but they went to public high school

Yup, Barbara was a Freshman at Yale & Jenna was a Freshman at UT when Bush was inaugurated.

Barron went to St. Andrew's.

The only people who think it’s admirable are the ones who have a chip on their shoulders about private schools. If you don’t like private, don’t send your kids there. But it’s none of your business what other people do. They’re actually keeping your property taxes down by paying for something they’re not going to use.

You are defensive about a discussion about potus kids. Unless you are a former First Lady, this post was not about you.

Not being defensive at all. Responding to the idea it’s something to be “admired” to choose public school. It’s not. People are free to choose for their families what they want. It’s none of anyone else’s business.

And the anti-private school people who insist on being in others business really need to get their stories straight… is it a waste of money or buying an advantage?

I really don't care whether you or any regular people do in terms of school choice. I said "admire" in this very specific context about Carter. I do think elected officials have more responsibility when it comes to what their decisions signal and symbolize. It's like my superintendent sending his kids to private school. That was a bad look. You should inspire confidence in your work and leadership abilities.

Imagine a USA President in this day and age doing that.

I can't imagine this is true. I have a friend who was friends with her in middle school, who remembers going on bike rides on the Camp David grounds, so within the security perimeter, with Secret Service following them.

Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft had kids in DCPS at some point.

That’s interesting because his son Ben went to St. Albans. He found a cockroach in the cafeteria food and when the school newspaper wanted to report on it the administration spiked the article. Then all of the editors resigned and started a new school newspaper called The Independent. This was in 1988 or 1989, Quayle kid was probably 12 at the time.

The Bush girls were def kindergarteners at Horace Mann (the public elementary in DC not the private in NYC) bc the family was living in DC. I was their lunch aid as a 5th or 6th grader. Barbara used to come to the school and help us plant the garden.

I cannot think of any others since then.

Carter was the only President who walked the talk. Funny how Democrats want school choice only for themselves, but not for middle class Americans.

You can’t walk a talk.

Someone may talk the talk but not walk the walk — that makes them a hypocrite.
Or someone can not just talk the talk but also walk the walk — that makes them a real ‘un

Was that when he was a Senator?
