Was Carter the most recent president to have sent his child to attend DCPS?

Was he the most recent president to do?

I cannot think of any others since then.

Yep.

Reagan and GHW Bush’s kids were all adults.

Chelsea Clinton went to Sidwell.

The W Bush twins went to some private.

The Obama girls went to Sidwell.

They were already in college by the time he was inaugurated.

Honestly, I loved a lot of things about Jimmy Carter, but my expectations of a parent is that they will put their kid first. My understanding is that at Stevens, Amy was not allowed to play outside because there was no way to secure the playground. That sounds pretty miserable for a kid. And frankly, the risk would be significantly higher now. I would judge a president who chose to put their kid at risk in that way. Eventually she moved on to Hardy which was out of bounds, but easier to secure, but I'm still not convinced it was the best choice.

I admire the choice. I disagree that it meant he didn't put her first: Being a POTUS kid means huge advantages your entire life no matter where you went to school. And she was not at risk with security. I think it's an amazing message to give to people: I'm no better than you, and your kids matter as much as my kid. Here is a very nice article about it: https://wtop.com/dc/2017/08/flashback-1970s-amy-carter-dc-public-schools/

That's bad thinking. There aren't dozens of well funded groups extremely highly motivated to kidnap my children for their nefarious or deaperate reasons.

How does Sidwell prevent intruders? Did the Secret Service attend Sidwell with the kids?

Yes there were agents on the premises when Chelsea and the Obama daughters attended classes and after school stuff.

This decision from presidents after Carter to send children to private was entirely secret service driven.

They never attended public schools back in their respective states.

My question is who was the last one before Carter? He might have been the only president to do this!

Ford’s daughter went to Holton-Arms and had her Senior Prom at the White House.

Before that I think you have to go back to Kennedy for resident children. Mrs. Kennedy set up a preschool in the White House.

Pretty sure Chelsea Clinton went to a public school in Arkansas before moving to DC. Keep in mind DC in the early 1990s was pretty abysmal and no sane parent in their right mind would have accepted the local public schools.
