uhhh nah. research has been done in this area and the "official" ivy-plus schools are the ones that show a benefit at the top of certain fields only. The ivy plus schools are all ivy and Stanford MIT Duke Chicago. True elite are these 12. Correlate world rankings and usn before they went insane with factors that are more about diversity than talent, and the same 12 pop up for almost everything.
benefits in all top sectors of career and grad/professional school favoritism.
Elite but not most elite includes JHU Northwestern Caltech WashU Gtown ND Rice Vanderbilt Berkeley UCLA Williams Amherst Swarthmore. That is T25 overall including the top 4 LACs.

Actually most research shows that the school is mostly irrelevant once you control for student specific factors.

CMU, Emory, UVA, Umich are T25. USC and UNC were recently T25. Pomona is T4 LAC ...?

Pomona has traditionally been in the top 4 lacs. It is the most competitive LAC to get into.

I know, I'm saying pp didn't include them. There's only 3 LACs listed.

It is not as good as the other top 3 LACs. It is too new.

Wut? Being “old” is a criterion for being a great college? So silly.

The last 3 in Italics are borderline. So about 30ish.

I’d agree with this. Not bad

"How many elite/top schools are there?"

How many ways are there to ask this inane question?

Do you go by Forbes or US News?

You could also use WSJ or Niche. . .

Isn't WSJ behind a paywall? Also,, isn't WSJ just as woke as US News? I actually am asking and do not know.

Is woke a bad thing?

One study focused on career placement & elite professional school placement concluded that there are 34 elite US colleges & universities.

In my opinion, I think that there are about double that number which can be viewed as elite schools.

Sure but pp's list said he includes all Top 25 schools and Top 4 LACs. But didn't include one of the Top 4 LACs and didn't include 4 T25 schools namely Emory, CMU, Umich, and UVA. (Also, UNC, USC, and NYU have been T25 a few times in the past)

Maybe WHYPSM + the next 20 - 25 schools?

So … Top 30 or so?

While the acronym is correct, your translation is not; the correct meaning of WHYPSM = Wharton, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, & MIT.

For better or worse, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT will always be regarded as the top 5.

Then it's Duke, Penn, Columbia, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Cornell, Dartmouth, Rice, Brown, CalTech, Johns Hopkins, Chicago, Dartmouth, Berkeley, West Point, Annapolis, Notre Dame, and Williams.

I think that's about it for genuine "elite."

Georgetown, Michigan, UCLA, Emory, Swarthmore, WashU, Pomona, Carnegie Mellon, and Bowdoin would be the next tier.

But ultimately, the best school is the best fit for each kid.

Well said!

I think there are no schools that should be in the t25 that are not in this post. You got them all.

PP is missing UVA, which is USNR 24 and 4tg best public the USA
