As a gay dude who considers himself culturally Christian and with a pretty good understanding of Christian theology and the history of Christianity, people these days will believe what they want to believe and claim it as the right Christian approach. But early Christianity was not anyone be anyone they want and do anything they want and you'll be forgiven of the happy clappy modern rainbow flag waving Episcopalian or Unitarian church. Not by a long shot. The fundamentalists are going to be on the much stronger theological and historical grounds with their anti-homosexual stances and it would also be correct for the time Jesus was alive, which was not by any stretch any kind of tolerant paradise. Jesus and his disciples left pretty good clues in the NT that is mostly overlooked (deliberately?) by liberal progressive Christians these days. After all, while God loves everyone, a major (emphasis on major) theme of Christianity was repent and repent exists for a reason.
But at the same time all religions evolve and certain beliefs take precedence while others fade. Christianity is not exempt. Old Christian beliefs have disappeared, modern ones are emerging. The concept of Jesus himself has also greatly changed. The faith is a living organism. Which means both your son and the progressive Christians get to be right. The only realistic way forward is to tell son that he believes in his Christianity, you believe in your Christianity, and he has to deal with it. |
