| How are the tacos in Silver Spring tho? |
Not great. If there's actually a good taco place in the DMV, please let us know. |
I live in another neighborhood within this area - Sligo Woods. I agree with this description. Many families with kids on the block, an active community association that hosts a halloween parade, a good number of parents engaged at the schools. I feel safe walking in my neighborhood at night, having my kids walk places during the day, etc. My Amazon packages sit on my front steps untouched. If you budget is $1 million plus, you might go live in the more affluent parts of Montgomery County, like Bethesda. For houses in the $400-650K range, Silver Spring is a sensible place to consider. My kids have gone through the public schools, which are very diverse, and I see that as a good thing. My kids' middle school is about 30% white, 30% black, 30% Latino, 10% Asian. My kids are familiar with and comfortable with all kinds of people, which is serving them well. I guarantee you that the people screaming that it is a crime-infested hellhole do not spend time in Silver Spring and are relying on (racist) hearsay. Yes, there are definitely some crimes, especially in downtown SS. In my neighborhood, the major crime is people rifling through stuff in parked cars overnight. Usually, the owner had left the car unlocked. |
| Wife grew up in Woodmoor. Thats a great neighborhood in SS |
If this is Op, no that zip is not nice. See the zips and neighborhoods that pps have posted. Avoid that zip though. |
| I personally think it’s pretty bland and has too much crime, but it’s all some can afford. |
| Ugly housing stock and commercial corridors |

I grew up and spent most of my adult life west of the park in DC.
I now live in the Oakland Terrace part of add because my husband lives here and his kids are in the schools here. These posts about crime are bizarre to me. I feel super safe in a way that I didn’t in Cleveland Park, the West End, DuPont and Woodley. I have never witnessed any crime. I have never seen a homeless person. The Zillow estimate of our house is 600k. However I would rather live in DC with the increased crime. More interesting, prettier, close to more things to do. I get bored out here. But Oakland Terrace is a very practical place to live if you have kids and are middle class. Decent schools, decent housing for a decent price, and your kids can go in state to Maryland universities. |

Oakland Terrace poster. Typo. FYI Oakland Terrace is in Silver Spring
Another plus to living out here - way more swimming pools than DC |

Lived here now for 31 years. Most of my neighbors are lifers, and their kids have come back to roost to raise their own kids
Less than an hour to 3 airports; I make 3 -4 international trips a year. No reason to move. 20902. |
| I too have seen "generational" Silver Spring-ers. I live 6 blocks walk to Forest Glen metro. It is perfect if you work downtown DC, which I did for nearly 40 years. I'm staying in place during my retirement, beginning this year. My kids just graduated from College Park 3 years ago. Can't really claim to have had any problems. Kids want to stay close. |
This is a 100% data driven statement that has nothing to do with race. Police precinct 3 (where Silver Spring is located) had almost 50% of all firearm discharge offenses in 2023. https://montgomerycountymd.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=169&event_id=16031&meta_id=171079 Silver Spring has a per capita crime rate that is significantly higher than other areas of the county. |
| I lived in 20902 from 2015-2021 and loved it! The area was very urban, but it appealed to me; it was within walking distance of everything, and I never had any issues with crime. |
The shooting of the man who was out with his family for dinner right before Christmas haunts me to this day. When I lived in SS, I parked in that garage almost every weekend when shopping/visiting DTSS. |
