The part of SS I know best is the neighborhoods just north of the beltway but south of University Blvd. So, McKenney Hills/Carroll Knolls to the west and Forest Estates, etc. to the east. These are full of well-kept modest mid-century brick homes with young families who are friendly and involved in the schools. The neighborhoods have easy access to parks, trails, retail, and the metro. It’s a lovely place to live.
I live in another neighborhood within this area - Sligo Woods. I agree with this description. Many families with kids on the block, an active community association that hosts a halloween parade, a good number of parents engaged at the schools. I feel safe walking in my neighborhood at night, having my kids walk places during the day, etc. My Amazon packages sit on my front steps untouched. If you budget is $1 million plus, you might go live in the more affluent parts of Montgomery County, like Bethesda. For houses in the $400-650K range, Silver Spring is a sensible place to consider. My kids have gone through the public schools, which are very diverse, and I see that as a good thing. My kids' middle school is about 30% white, 30% black, 30% Latino, 10% Asian. My kids are familiar with and comfortable with all kinds of people, which is serving them well. I guarantee you that the people screaming that it is a crime-infested hellhole do not spend time in Silver Spring and are relying on (racist) hearsay. Yes, there are definitely some crimes, especially in downtown SS. In my neighborhood, the major crime is people rifling through stuff in parked cars overnight. Usually, the owner had left the car unlocked.
This is a 100% data driven statement that has nothing to do with race. Police precinct 3 (where Silver Spring is located) had almost 50% of all firearm discharge offenses in 2023. https://montgomerycountymd.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=169&event_id=16031&meta_id=171079 Silver Spring has a per capita crime rate that is significantly higher than other areas of the county.
