I'm curious if the idea here is to be able to sell stock tax free taking advantage of the tax break for businessmen turned government officials, like Henry Paulson Jr did going from Goldman Sachs to the Treasury and selling 700m in equity after being appointed due to potential conflicts of interest.

According to WSJ, DOGE will operate outside the Federal Govt (likely be something along the lines of an FFRDC that will allow Musk and Vivek to not have to give up their business interests). OMB will be tasked with implementing their recommendations.

FFRDCs are research and development centers sponsored by an existing agency. So they’re creating a group to research efficiency despite the fact that departments innthe govt already exist for this and there are already major companies with this expertise.

Yes, he created the acronym. He is also talking about reducing government spending by 2 trillion, which is incredibly unrealistic. That would involve eliminating the entire discretionary budget. Only Medicare and social security, and interest on debt would be left. This means there would be no DOD, HHS, DOE, DHS or anything else. All governments functions would be eliminated basically. Yes government spending needs to go down, but Medicare and social security will need to be cut if you want to come anywhere close to balancing the budget. It is impossible do it only by cutting discretionary spending.

Tell that to Elon's friend Javier Milei. He cut Argentina's fiscal deficit by 15 points of the GDP.

They can sell tax free, but immédiately must reinvest at the original basis. It’s a way to diversify your holdings without taking a tax hit (eg, sell your Goldman stock and diversify into SP500 or munis)
