Solid school with great outcome and proximity to NYC.
Great choice if can't get into the Boston or NY schools - NYU, BU, BC, Tufts, Northeastern.

It’s not the middle of nowhere, but Bethlehem isn’t the most exciting town.

100k, depressed PA towns aren’t exactly great college backdrops…but it is reasonably close to NYC and Philly.

Not every kid finds NYC or Philly a place they want to be or even visit. And Boston is far.

Are you in the DMV?
If so, Boston isn't too far.
It takes less than 7 hours on the Amtrak Acela, and it's easier and more pleasant than driving.

Just take airplane.
Relatively cheap if plan ahead.

My sister attended. I do not think she ever visited NYC or Philly, Her life was focused on the campus. I think she was happy. Her career path has changed considerably so her undergrad degree is probably not too relevant anymore.

+1 Social life is on-campus.

The student center will supposedly open in the spring according to our first year engineering school daughter. There is a surprisingly nice center area in Bethlehem across the river from the school. Beautiful historic homes (the Moravian district) and a surprisingly hopping restaurant, brewpub and wine bar selection. We were surprised at how nice that area was. The Lehigh kids aren’t likely to spend too much time there though - social life seems to be centered on campus and nearby in the south Bethlehem college town area.

For what it is worth, our daughter seems to be having a good beginning to her time there. It is easy to get involved in activities, she says the kids are generally pretty nice and friendly and the faculty has been accessible.

Vibe at Lehigh is basically well adjusted nice kids that skew UMC. Variety of kids but would say mostly social well-rounded and from UMC burbs and prep/boarding school but the University genuinely seems to be trying to expand geographic diversity from the tri-state NY area. For engineering, it didn’t have that quirky vibe you get from Olin,WPI, RIT, etc. It is a top 50 school and the comparison SLACs is apples and oranges if you are studying engineering as the SLACs (except Harvey Mudd) generally lack the offerings of Lehigh. Also, its admittance rate RD is getting very small so I wouldn’t consider it a safety for anyone. Overall rate of 25% in 2024 also makes it a competitive school. Acceptance Rate was higher while it was trying to expand its new health college but now trending down.

I know 3 families with current freshmen boys. 1 fratty and loving it, the other 2 are nerdy and loving it.

What do the nerdy boys do for fun?

I have one who like tech theater, hiking and video games.

Not a frat bro guy at all. What would he do?

Really? Surprised to hear this. This is close to DC's stats, and I thought it would be a target or maybe a low reach at hardest.

They are filling a lot of their class with ED1 and 2. There aren’t that many slots left once RD comes along.

My son applied with similar stats last year. He had planned to apply RD but after the ED1 round our school counselor suggested he move it to ED2, based on what she saw in the first round. He was accepted and is happy there now. In the regular round, several of his classmates with better stats (yes, I know, that's not the whole picture- but it is the easiest apples:apples comparison) were rejected or waitlisted. All in all, two kids from our HS were accepted ED1, my son ED2, and the only kid (that he knows of) to be accepted in the regular round was legacy & had a 740V/800M.

Small sample size, but it made us confident in our decision to go with ED2.

Says every bucknell student and no one else. That school and its students and parents have been the biggest self promoters for decades. Lehigh is way more prestigious and always ranks high in schools with grads earning top salaries. I didn’t go to Lehigh. Bucknell should rank high in marketing because that is where they seem to shine!
