Vibe at Lehigh

Solid school with great outcome and proximity to NYC.
Great choice if can't get into the Boston or NY schools - NYU, BU, BC, Tufts, Northeastern.

It’s not the middle of nowhere, but Bethlehem isn’t the most exciting town.

100k, depressed PA towns aren’t exactly great college backdrops…but it is reasonably close to NYC and Philly.

Not every kid finds NYC or Philly a place they want to be or even visit. And Boston is far.

I thought that, until my son matriculated there. So many of his classmates are legit geniuses who could have been accepted anywhere. I honestly was kind of bummed he was heading there (thought it was beneath him) but his friends there have changed my mind.

I’m not a college counselor so I’m not sure if your child stats match up but looking at acceptance rates Lehigh 29, Bucknell 32, Colgate 12, Amherst 9, Williams 7. I would think some of this would come into consideration when applying.

My kid is there and loves it. Definitely fratty vibe, but majority of kids are not Greek, although it’s a big presence on campus. According to my DC, the kids are welcoming. The students study hard, but like to have fun. Lots of activities, club sports. It’s the Cinderella size~6000. As previously mentioned, surrounding area is typical PA mill town, although are some lovely neighborhoods. Restaurants and bars near campus. Oh-and that mountain is no joke. Supposedly, escalator inventor went to Lehigh. It’s worth a visit if your child is interested.

Lehigh is well known in engineering academic circle..so if kid has plans for a MS or PhD - great.

Otherwise - its in the middle of no where and campus hiring is pathetic. Would not recommend.

Business school is much better. For some reason they have good connections on Wall Street.

Campus hiring is pathetic in what way?

Bucknell is the better choice if this is your goal, but Lehigh has a decent presence on The Street for a school its size.

Bethlehem is not the middle nowhere. Give me a break.

But the fit and feel is so different? I can't see a social sporty girl fitting in at Amherst?

Colgate is the smallest, right?

We just visited and my future engineering major loved it. It felt really welcoming and inclusive. I’d heard the frat boy stereotype here, so it’s nice to hear some more varied perspectives! Anyone know about support for disabilities? (Autism in this case, but would be interested in other experiences as well.)

Bethlehem seemed really depressing and our tour guide mostly talked about how the student center was closed for renovation.

My sister attended. I do not think she ever visited NYC or Philly, Her life was focused on the campus. I think she was happy. Her career path has changed considerably so her undergrad degree is probably not too relevant anymore.

Are you in the DMV?
If so, Boston isn't too far.
It takes less than 7 hours on the Amtrak Acela, and it's easier and more pleasant than driving.

It's a pain in the butt because it takes the whole day up with all the college gear in the car and the whole day back the next day. Doable, as we've been doing it for years now, but just far enough to be a pain.
