| School year increases participation at the youngest ages, which increases the quantity and quality of players later. School year also eliminates trapped players in the MS/HS and HS/college transitions. It was a shortsighted switch to BY and it should be corrected. It will be a headache to correct, but it will be good for players (trapped players) and good for the system in the long run. |

| Redshirting for the win! |
I understand why folks would want this change for social reasons / convenience, but it will not be good for "the system" in the long run, if what is good for the system is creating high quality players that can compete internationally. But, I don't know that that should be goal. It might be the most realistic option that soccer in this country remains a second tier sport in terms of quality of players and popularity. Making the ties between club soccer and high school and college stronger will certainly make that the reality. If the goal is to ascend into the top tier of international soccer there need to be more and better professional academies where soccer is not seen as a thing to do with friends in high school and/or the goal is higher than just playing in college. |

Just wait until US Soccer and NWSL create NWSL Next and mirror it on MLS Next which is expected to stay BY no matter what happens.
Suddenly the top girls clubs will all want to participate in NWSL Next with BY teams. Then you'll have 2 different types of teams for top players. Or just keep everything BY so everything works together. |
Yep it fkd my 2005 right around the time he had to go up a year away from 95% of his team to the higher age group that had already been 11v11 for a year. Then--he was fkd as an 8th grader when the rest of the team was HS and didn't have a spring season. And then fkd again as a Senior with nobody left from his team. So--yeah, of course now that he's a Freshmen in college they are changing their minds. Lol |
At least my 2008 is right in the middle of the year--so either direction has nil effect on him. |
"will bring some programs down". Really? Stop being so dramatic. No club is going to fall apart from this change. Just like no club fell apart the last time it changed. There will be some short term affects to individual teams but it will be fine. In a few years we won't even remember it happened. Just like last time. |
Exactly, if you look at the boys side and how recruiting occurs it's a view into what will happen with girls if the game continues to gain popularity. ECNLs choice to go all in on college recruiting could blow up in their face with all the NCAA changes happening. |
Imagine yelling this to a 6 or 7 year old that wants to play with their friends and telling them their will be no friends in soccer, "And this wholes playing with friends thing is ridiculous. What happens when you go to college? You get to play with friends there to?" |
This change could most certainly blow up some clubs. Think about it. Some clubs are holding on by a thread and now you're introducing something that might make trapped players look elsewhere because suddenly they're in demand. |
Trapped player parent here. My kid never cared who she played with. Also she does play futsal with her friends in school (who play up). |
No it is not an issue. It is not worth the effort for few the “trapped” players. Go play rec. |
Why are there so few trapped players? Oh, because they all drop out and stop playing..... |
And there will still be trapped players with SY. |
