She is a public school English teacher. She needs to keep her political views to herself when she’s on the job. End of story.

I don't see how anyone doesn't get this. Only people who want to indoctrinate our kids with their own political POVs thinks this is acceptable. I don't want pro-anything taught in my kid's high school English class.

Is there a specific way in which she has retaliated against a student for disagreeing, or discriminated against them for their beliefs/identify/ethnicity? If not, what is this about? Calling a war where tens of thousands of children on one side only have been killed is a genocide. Israel is an apartheid state, even if the “reason” for the apartheid is fear of terrorism. These are objective truths. Is this teacher calling for the death of Israelis or Americans of Jewish faith? Or is she having them read or watch material that is critical of the State and its actions and asking them to respond.

There’s a lot to unpack here but let’s not get off topic - a high school English class is not the appropriate forum to ask students to respond to this teachers beliefs. If it was any other group being targeted, this would not stand.

She is not targeting a group. She is criticizing the policies of a particular government. Unless you agree with those policies, you would not feel included. Many Jews in Israel are very opposed to what is happening.

Did you read the article? I’m sorry but even if you disagree with what Israel is doing via a vis Gaza, there is literally no place in a public school (or anywhere else for that matter) where one should be allowed to accuse Israelis of playing victim because of the Holocaust. Shame on her, and shame on APS. And shame on any of you who think this is anything but blatant anti-Semetism. The holocaust happened. The victimization of Israelis and Jews as part of the holocaust should not be the topic of any legitimate political discourse. It’s just hate speech, plain and simple.

It didn't say that anywhere in the article!

“ Shayma Al-Hanooti, who works at Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington, gave her students politically charged assignments such as sorting out “logical fallacies” in how Israelis use the “Holocaust to victimize themselves,” new documents reveal.”

Uhm, did she deny with that question that the holocaust happened?

Oh my god stop it. We all see through this. “Ummmm ???” FOH. I hope she gets fired, this is blatantly racist.

-not Jewish or Israeli

Uhm, Judaism is not a race. Criticizing the Israeli government is not anti-Semitic. Period. I applaud her.

Israel is literally the ONLY Jewish state. Period.
So the fact that you want to pretend it’s “just a critique of the government “ is not only insane, but it’s dangerous.

So why are thousands of Jews against their own government!!!!!!!!!!!!!>???????????????? Because they see they are being played by Netanyahu!!!

There’s some parents of current IB seniors, probably the same ones, who have also complained about the assignment of work that is critical of the US and our racial history. And one student in particular has made some pretty racist comments in that course. Maybe a private school would be better if the only thing teachers are allowed to teach is what is approved by parents and supports only a worldview which aligns with your own.

This is "objectively" true only if you ignore the definition of genocide. There are actual genocides taking place in the world today - Myanmar, for example - but that isn't what happening in Gaza. I know it's gins up a lot of outrage in the uninformed TikTok crowd to claim that, but it just isn't true.

God, I feel so bad for our kids. Everything is being so f-ing dumbed down for them. WHY shouldn't think be discussed??????

NP. The poster above you is absolutely correct. It’s fine for a teacher facilitate an analytical discussion among students, but they should not reveal their own views at all.

Unless you are also ok with your kid’s English telling them that abortion is murder, gay people are going to hell, and Putin is a great guy? If you have a problem with any of these being said by a public school teacher to students, you should have a problem with all of them.

And most of all you don't want any critical thinking occurring. God forbid!

Not PP. So not racist, anti-Semitic.

You can applaud her when she’s protesting on the streets but not in the public school classroom.

I'm sure you'd have no problem with her if she were weeping over the hostages, hypocrite.

Would she be doing it in an anti-Muslim way?

It’s not “criticizing Israel” that is the issue.
It’s advocating for students to chant anti-Semitic slogans such as “from the river to the sea Palestine will soon be free”….which is a dog-whistle anti-Semitic code for “wipe out the jewwws”

But you know this.

Your disingenuous victim hood is why people don’t support your point of view.
We can agree that Israel needs to be more cautious in its response to the Oct 7 attacked by Hamas without excusing a call for the annihilation of Jewish people in
Israel.

She’s making kids chant slogans?

I don't want it thought as fact, but as long as the 17 year old honors student knows it's his teacher's personal view, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Israel deserves every ounce of criticism it's getting.

Yeah, those stupid Israelis. They got themselves murdered during the holocaust and now they think they’re the victims. Morons.

(That is sarcasm, btw)

I would be more sympathetic if 1) people like you wouldn't scream anti-Semitism every time someone a) criticized Netanyahu b) expressed concern for thousands dead and starting children and innocent people in Gaza. I condemned the terrorist attacks of October 7, but I also know that Netanyahu loved it and is getting exactly what he wants at the moment. I don't want my tax money going to support the genocide he is perpetrating.

What’s happening is the definition of genocide, and I’m too old for Tik Tok. Is it the only genocide? No, but it’s the one we’re discussing.

It's 100% genocide.

That’s not what this teacher is doing. I have no problem criticizing Netanyahu and far too many innocent people have been killed in Gaza. But that’s not this.
