What schools are building new and exciting new spaces?

Smith converted to geothermal and redid its library --the architect was Maya Lin and it came out beautiful.

They need to replace the old dorms, which are crap construction, and dining halls, which are airport foot court design level. So I appreciate the investment. But they keep using Robert A M Stern and getting boring “hospital lobby” design .

When will that project begin/be completed. Have a hs senior and wondering if they would benefit from that...

I was there about a month ago and it looked like it could be done a year from now. at most, two years. Hard to say, but the exterior was topped out.

Below are some of the recent highlights.

Opened new science and research building late last year.

Acquired Maymount in NYC. This should be great addition in the areas of performing art, theater, art in general for the school.

Just won a legal battle to build a new 55,000SF research facility at a 20 acres of great Boston location.

I don't like to sound like a curmudgeon, but Boston is a very hard city to build large-scale projects. It will be quite the feat if they pull that off. Boston University has een fighting for decades to build.

They’re building an entirely new campus that will double the size of their current one.

Claremont McKenna did not come to play. It is stunning what they are doing. My only fear is that it becomes an impossible admit by the time my kid #3 applies. The construction won’t be fun, but the finished product will be a new gold standard for exciting facilities.

oh that is great!

Last March, there was an anonymous donor that gave $30M that will be used for the renovation of a building that will house the Global Research Institute, Institute for Integrative Conservation and Whole of Government Center of Excellence.

Then just a few weeks ago, there was a $100M donation for the Marine Sciences department.

I've got a sophomore there now who says the construction is so distracting and they will not see the results until after they graduate.
Hopefully the housing will at least ease up next year with the new dorms.

Crap. I was feeling pretty good about myself for sending my alma mater 100 bucks to buy a new mimeograph machine.

The city of Boston has agreements with Boston University and Northeastern mandating that the schools not increase their enrollments. But both schools are buying/building massive dorms. Not to admit more students but to bring them back to campus instead of surrounding, private housing. BU just built an incredible Innovation Center. Northeastern probably has built so many new buildings that its campus is unrecognizable from a couple of decades ago.

Columbia is building a brand new campus in Manhattan.

What campus? It's just part of a city.

Penn State Engineering & College of IST just opened several brand new buildings this year and last couple of years on West campus - gorgeous engineering spaces.

And the DC museum conversion for their grad school is fantastic. They have weak points (their cafeterias are ick), but they have a design team that is making up for it w the new stuff.

Also saw Georgetown and while they are also putting up some building, it looks like they decided not to spend a lot for design. Super blah.

Any other colleges you've seen lately with notable new buildings opening soon?

Do go inside any of the buildings. JHU’s infrastructure is a joke. Well known among colleges. I can’t believe I read this on a forum! Like hearing that Trump is a policy wonk.

Brown recently opened the Lindemann performing arts center. I don't love it, but I suppose its value is in its flexible configurations.

Lafayette was building something when we visited.

this just isn't true for any of the many new buildings.

Except most buildings aren’t new. And just give it a few years given the lack of maintenance there. Most recent survey of grad schools had infrastructure as JHUs worst feature, keeping it far from the top ten rankings its undergrad program gets. Which may not seem to matter if you are an undergrad until you want to do research or extracurriculars.
