yes, but we are wondering about the opposite. how many 4.0 kids go to crappy schools.

What's crappy? Best students at our school stay in-state for the most part. Then a couple go to Tulane, Vanderbilt...The rich ones.

Tulane is crappy. Vanderbilt is ok.

Your post about Tulane is based on what exactly? Our kid is at Tulane and it seems everyone there is driven. DC said if they aren't taking 16+ credits a semester, they aren't keeping up. Lots of double majors or multiple minors. Like DC's classmates, DC has placed very well with internships and has a post-grad job offer. Sorry if your kid didn't have a good outcome, but that doesn't seem to be the norm.

And Vanderbilt is "okay" lol!

Standardized test scores submitted or TO?

Submitted 1540, I think

App was very strong in recommendations (her school wanted to nominate her for UVA Jefferson award)

Also very involved in social justice and school leadership and sports, but a Mediocre athlete :/

Well rounded - lots of AP history and literature, and even 1 science and calc AB, but hates math & science

Sounds like a kid who will love Brown and fit right in. Congrats!!!!

Back when I was in school, there were maybe 1 or 2 in our class of 200 who had a 4.0 UWGPA.

Stanford

He had incredible extracurriculars and [i]we curated his application starting from freshman year[b]. I had a relative that was a former admissions officer at Penn, Vanderbilt, and Duke. We knew what we were doing.

The bolded made me throw up in my mouth

That doesn't sound pleasant. Maybe shoot for the toilet. And nothing is even bolded.

My dd is #37 in her class with a 4.0 unweighted. She has APs, advanced and college classes as well. Her weighted is 5.9.

Exactly. Encouraging your kid to do activities that they will enjoy and learn from: great for them, and also generally great for college applications. "Curating"? Sounds like you're making your kid into a museum.

Slacker

This is why GPAs are meaningless without context. A 4.6 is the highest in our FCPS. At your kid’s school maybe a 6.0 is the highest. At the kid’s school in the article, it’s an 8.0.

Different poster: Tulane has a lovely setting but it is a major party school. We went to one of the admitted students days and found that to be a real turn off. From talking to the students and parents, I would say parties are more important than studying.

Had a friend who’s dream was to go to Tulane but he transferred after one to many drunken seminars. Said there was no learning. YMMV

This is the problem with public high schools. Way too much grade inflation.
My kid from a private high school is starting at an Ivy with a 3.8uw

AO do see the difference.

4.0 UWGPA, 1560 SAT, 16 APs
Attends Stanford; Berkeley Regents & USC Presidential Scholar

Child spent very little time on academics (1.5-2 hrs of schoolwork/night, did not prep for SAT exam, anything above 1550+ is excellent so don't waste time on the 1600). Bulk of time was spent on extracurricular activities.
