Navy kiss and ride

I don’t think people understand just how bad things are at Navy at the moment, especially in 6th grade. Yes, some parents are crazy, but most are not. And there is a large group of very normal parents who are, understandably, pissed that their kids have a substitute between the hours of 12:20-2:50. If the sub was actually teaching? Fine. But she’s not. She’s allowing the kids to go on their computers, unsupervised, for a good portion of that time. I don’t care about Kiss and Ride. I don’t care who’s hurling insults and who. I just want my kid to have a freaking teacher. Is that too much to ask for??

There are vacancies across the County. It sucks. People are leaving Teaching because the work environment is awful. Part of that is parents who are unreasonable. The Navy parents come across as unreasonable in every thread that is created dealing with Navy. I am guessing that the posters who come off as unreasonable are a minority at the school but if they speak to Admin and Teachers at Navy the way that they post on this board I know I would not want to work at Navy. They are not pleasant.

There is a real difference between advocating and badgering. Most of the Navy parents at this site are badgering. I suspect that the large number of Navy threads that get started here are because the board is anonymous and a FB group would not be. People are using the threads here are down right nasty in their comments and they could not be on a FB page.

Sorry your BFF got caught drunk driving and had to leave the school so that you're no longer getting preference.

You just wait until next year when your child does not have a teacher and ever changing subs and unruly classes. Let's just see how you feel then. My kid will be in middle school and then I will be laughing at you.

Is it possible that they can't find a full-time teacher because the parent community at this school has a horrible reputation?

I see you didn't deny that you don't like the current principal. We all know why. Don't even try to hide it.

I have never heard this. Please elaborate.

All you need to do is do a search on DCUM for this school and you will see how crazy the parents are.

Ok, but I meant I haven’t heard that they can’t find a full time teacher because of parents. Please elaborate on that.

OMG. Potential teachers hear that the parent community is awful through the grapevine, there are openings at every school, so they choose a different school over Navy. It's not complex.

That's how every school should bem

I agree. I don't understand where all the parent hate is coming from. I frequently see posts like "I'm not a navy parent, but navy parents are crazy." No they aren't. They are advocates for their children. Sure, some few may be overzealous, but I think that comes with being an AAP center, there are a lot of parents with very high expectations which until recently, the Navy administration has delivered on. I saw a previous post about the former AP that was beloved and sent away to a new school that is so lucky to have him and he is now principal. He took several great teachers with him. I miss him and those teachers. All are wonderful people that the vast majority of parents would welcome back with open arms.

I mean was he "sent away" or did he choose to leave because the parents at the new school had a better reputation and were easier to deal with. I would absolutely not want a job where all people did was complain, complain, complain and expect that their children deserved better than at all the other public schools in the area. You don't see any other school come up in this forum as much as Navy does and it's ALWAYS parents complaining.

I'm curious about if parents have gone to the principal, the Executive Principal, the Regional Superintendent about this concern? Or would you rather just complain anonymously? There is a way to get things done in FCPS and it does not involve as much whining as I see on this board. The parents at my children's school many years ago banded together and went through proper procedures in order to have FCPS leadership take a hard look at a really bad principal, and that principal was let go, for example. In this case, it sounds like you have a really good case to ask the school system to find you a new long-term substitute. You have to make some phone calls though, and a lot of millennials are really scared to get on the phone, so I don't know what to tell you.

Lady, we have 6th graders. Many of us are old, uncool, gen x-ers. And we are already one step ahead of you. So far we have met with the principal, Douglas Tyson (he’s actually coming back to the school for a meeting next week), Dr. Copeland, Seema Dixit and the Ombudsman. Dr. Ponce is next on the list. We’ve got a a GREAT case….and they’re still not doing anything.

It sounds like a crappy situation. I am assuming that the school is trying to hire Teachers and struggling. What do you expect them to do outside of hiring Teachers? There is a shortage of Subs and Teachers in the country. That doesn’t change that it sucks for your kids and that you are worried, I understand that.

This. The parents think the admin can just snap their fingers and a good replacement will arrive. There really is nothing they can really do until they get a good candidate. I’ve heard all sorts of crazy ideas by parents they won’t work. They just don’t get it.

Not at all. Personally, I think that admin did a great job hiring 25+ staff during a teacher shortage, and I am fully aware that we are not getting a certified teacher any time soon. What I would like to see is admin providing some oversight into what is actually going on in that classroom, and to hold whoever is teaching the class accountable for making sure lessons are actually getting taught. I understand sub pay is sh*t, and that is a whole other topic, but you cannot just have kids sitting on their laptops for half the day. There are some pretty bad things happening as a result, and admin is starting to figure that out.

What do you think happens when there is no teacher? Subs are not going to lesson plan and most won't teach new material. You get what you pay for

A) The 6th grade team is providing detailed lesson plans, so they are not actually planning anything.

B) This is a long term sub.

C) As much as your pay sucks, you still have to do your job. And as much as you would like to think subs are nothing more than glorified babysitters, most subs that I know would be very offended by that assumption.

It's funny how you think you're the only people who have to deal with a long-term sub.
