How many WNV infections has DC had this year? |
Ae albopictus is generally believed to be a less efficient vector of arboviruses than Ae aegypti, the most important vector of Dengue. In particular, it is considered an inefficient vector of Dengue because it is not as well adapted to urban domestic environments and is less anthropophilic than Ae aegypti. |
| Can we crowd fund this? I get multiple mosquito bites a day. It’s insanity |
| I just visited the Adirondaks and I was floored by how pleasant it is to be in a relatively mosquito- free location. An absolute joy. Bring on the genetically modified mosquitos! |
| Asian Tiger sounds so racist and xenophobic |
| More rain last night. More food waste recycling bin lids filled with water. More mosquitoes next week. Thanks, progressive neighbors. |
| Bats don't eat enough mosquitoes to make a difference you need to spray and it's not just you it needs to be the whole neighborhood |
| Brazil has done this for years to help combat dengue. |

I felt bad when I heard Dr. Fauci got West Nile, bit I have to admit that I also thought well...maybe this will get the powers that be to get serious about this mosquito plague. So far, no dice, sadly.
For those recommending basic b solutions (plant native plants, encourage bats, use a fan, form some neighborhood anti standing water task force, bug spray, Thermacell, dunks, abolish city compost buckets even though the mosquito scourge drastically predates them... blah blah blah). Been there done that. NOTHING WORKS. It just keeps escalating. I swear the ones around my house have started to evolve to be able to squeeze through window screens. It's time to release the mutants! I'm with OP, how do we get this off the ground?? |
| I'm in Falls Church and can spray myself head to toe with DEET and watch Asian tiger mosquitos land on my skin minutes later. They're insane and infuriating. |
They have striped legs and came from Asia. So yea, Asian Tiger fits. |

They also bite through clothing! |
I can't tell if you're serious but we already have bats in the DMV area. |

We have some in our DC yard, but not enough to keep us inside. We plant a lot of bird friendly plants and mosquito repellant plants, take care of water, remove plant debris and keep grasses to a minimum. I usually rub some mint and basil leaves on exposed skin and don't get bit. I usually garden in long sleeves and pants. The bites I do get stop itching with a little plantain and coconut oil add go away pretty quickly. We practically live in our yard.
While you wait for a miracle answer, try planting alliums, mums, marigolds, mint, basil peppermint, cedar, catnip, patchouli, lemongrass, lavender -- all of these repel or confuse mosquitos. Grass is a hiding place for them. If you must have grass you need to keep it really short (which is not ecologically smart; better to avoid grass). Also piles of lawn debris will also attract them. Also they are weak fliers, so if you are just sitting around, a simple fan or breeze will also protect you. As will a fire pit. |
