Go ask 10 people who Celia Cruz is and about 9 will have no idea.

It sounds like you’re in a bubble.

Oh the irony.

Reminds me of my son being shocked that I don't know the latest diss track from Drizzy. She's also been dead for something like 20+ yrs, so maybe old people are more aware of who she is.

DC is a very provincial little town.

I don’t care whether I know her name or not (I do). The point of the project is to include women. Of course it would be very hard to find women with KNOWN historical significance (there are plenty with significance) because well duh women weren’t permitted to vote or have many roles outside of the home, even by these “great men” who face most of the US coinage.

I think this post is exactly why it is imporant that women like Celia Cruz are on the quarters. Now a bunch of people looked her up and hopefully learned something, and gave thought to the issue behind the project.

You’re … bent … because someone is depicted on currency?

You seem to think that is a flex. Here’s an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Imagine being big mad about not knowing who a famous person depicted on currency is. And instead of being humble about your ignorance, posting about it on the internet.

Seriously, just go watch some of her performances.

+1 She was super talented. Don't be so proud to be ignorant OP.

I'd be OK with having Vince Lombardi on a quarter. Heck, put him on Mount Rushmore, gap teeth & all.

Thank god no one uses physical cash anymore. The leftists have an outlet to channel their progressive urges, but no one uses it anyway.

The point is, she was an entertainer. Entertainers are worthless celebrities. People who actually make an impact on your life are much more important. What's next, Britney Spears on the next round of quarters?

As much as I disliked RBG, she had way more impact on all of our lives than a celebrity 9 out of 10 people have never heard of.

Who's more important and who has impacted more people's lives - Elizabeth Blackwell (first woman who graduated medical school in the US snd who pioneered women's health)or Celia Cruz? Who impacted more peoples' lives - Frances Kelsey (FDA scientist who prevented thousands of birth defects from thalidomide) or Celia Cruz?

Celebrities like movie stars and singers shouldn't be on currency because they rarely impact anyone's lives over generations.

For you to equate Celia Cruz, truly a cultural icon, with Britney Spears shows your complete ignorance.

Two kinds of people:

1) One thinks "I don't know who/what/why/how/where that is" and goes to learn. The world will always be interesting to these people, and they're fun to be around because they are willing to explore and learn. Being teachable is beautiful.

2) The other thinks "I don't know who/what/why/how/where that is, so it must not be important or worth caring about". These people are insufferable tw@ts.

OP, you're a #2.

Gimme a break

Without googling, name me the first Asian American actress in Hollywood. I bet my entire life savings on you not knowing the answer without googling.

Answer: Anna May Wong.

Omg, see how philistine, uncultured, and ignorant you are!!! How dare you not know C and D tier celebrities who've contributed little to the country. Maybe Wong needs to be on the quarters now too.

Thank god I haven't used hard cash in probably the last 1.5 years though..Who uses cash with irrelevant celebrities on it anymore?

I knew the answer without Googling or even thinking hard. I'm a 60YO white woman from an extremely white town. I have no deep knowledge of pop culture history.

Yeah, because unlike Cruz, Spears has multiple platinum albums. Everyone knows who Britney is to this day, even Gen Z and boomers. No one besides boomer and silent generation know who Cruz is.
