Who in the hell is Celia Cruz?

Sure you are

Exactly.

Celia Cruz is a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner. Sad there are people here who are just cultural illiterates and think there's nothing wrong with that. Rather than learning about who she is and appreciating her contributions to music and the cultural life of this country.

I have a lot of great memories of Celia's music across the decades but, as a pp mentioned, I am just over 40

Actually OP is such a fool hater that he (must be a he to be so deeply dumb) doesn't know who she is. Poor dumbo.

No she's not. She doesn't have a single platinum record to her name. She's a niche musician, just like the sex pistols are for punk rock.

If Celia Cruz doesn’t ring a bell for you as a singer, your cultural exposure is very narrow.

The “list” I was referring to was the list of women being honored on the quarter.

Seriously, just go watch some of her performances.

Nobody under 40 knows who Cruz is. Everyone under 40 knows who George Washington is. Why are we putting back corner entertainers on currency now? It should be reserved for people who actually change the country and are of great historical importance.

You realize that George Washington is still on these quarters, right?

Yes, because he has historical significance. That’s the point, duh. You can even litmus test historical significance - everyone under 40 knows who GW is, no one under 40 knows who Cruz is.

This is a great test but the mint keeps rejecting my idea for Muhammad obverse, Hitler reverse designs.

Why would they put non US citizens on there? What a dumb post.

Celia Cruz was a Cuban refugee and a naturalized US citizen.

Never heard of her

I know Celia Cruz. I did not realize she was an American citizen though until I looked that up just now.

I'm a white middle age mom and love the music of Celia Cruz. Try the soundtrack to the movie "The Mambo Kings" to see why she should be on the quarter.

She is a famous inventor and musician. I think she is a good fit.

I'm from Northern Europe and have danced to her music since 1997 here in US. I also picked up Spanish as it was the second language here.

Instead of going "huh, never heard of her, let's go find out" you decided to complain. You had an opportunity to learn something new, but it's apparently more fun for you to rant.

Be curious, not judgmental.

Says much about you.

She is an idol to the largest minority group in our country, not only as an artist but as a freedom lover and pioneer.

Celia Cruz is arguably a lot more well known than many other women on this list. Certainly more than Pauli Murray (which is a damn shame because Murray is awesome.)

I love that they chose a George Washington image sculpted by a woman for the obverse.

I think the PP was referring to the suggestion to put Muhammad and Hitler on a US coin.

So amazing to be in the presence of so many sophisticated and cultured people lmao

Go ask 10 people who Celia Cruz is and about 9 will have no idea.
