Kamala Harris fashion as President

It’s fine to have a thread for spouses and family members. But the nominees are off limits. If you wouldn’t have a thread for Trump or for Biden in terms of fashion, then there shouldn’t be one for Harris.

I agree.

We wouldn’t do this to a male candidate. Ugh.

Pretty sure we talked about Hillary’s pant suits. Why would Kamala be off limits? This is a fashion board.

All men always just wear dark suits. There is nothing to discuss. Women wear a variety of things, so there is something to discuss. Relax.

Barack Obama famously talked about paring back his suits/colors so he essentially had no fashion choicea to make because the President of the United States does not need decision fatigue due to these micro decisions.

I feel this in spades for any woman leader, anywhere.

Every now again, we trot out the trope that accomplished women cannot be fashionable and really I wonder if this is what they are talking about. There is a limit on attention, decision making, etc and some people (women here) just don’t want to spend it on creative fashions.

Personally I love her pant suits and heels. I don’t think she needs to change a thing.

She uniformly looks great. She is not gojng to be making the Hilary mistakes (like that bright yellow awful pantsuit). She will successfully take fashion off the table as a topic of conversation, thank God. So we can end this thread and just pop it up for the state dinners, please God.

From her sleek suits, comfortable trainers, classy pussybow blouses, to, most notably, her often-worn pearl earrings and necklaces - dubbed 'power pearls' and an homage to her college sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha (of Howard college, one of nine African American Greek-letter sororities and fraternities, where the founders are referred to as the Twenty Pearls) - the 55 year-old has perfected her political style.

Here, we take a look at her most notable ensembles over the last decade or so:

She looks great. Now on to more important things.

Serious question, why should we treat women candidates the same as male candidates? Yes, women are judged on their looks more than men. That's not fair, and maybe it's not right...but it's true. Pretending that it doesn't matter is to deny reality. And, frankly, I don't think there's anything wrong with paying attention to how people dress themselves. We live in a society where there is a standard uniform for men, but not for women...so it's harder for women in some sense, in another women have more freedom and flexibility. Either way, it is really reasonable in the fasion forum of a site filled with professional women to pay attention to the fashion of one of the politically highest ranking American women in history.

FWIW, I'm a petite Indian-American woman in an extremely male-dominated field. Since HS, I've often been the only woman in the room, and I've had to figure out my own style with few role models. I love fashion and feminine clothes, and I have to strike the right balance professionally. I enjoy seeing what other women do.

Is this a serious question? Harris has been in the public eye for many, many years. She dresses in a polished and professional way. It is unlikely she’s going to change that a POTUS candidate or POTUS. Yes, women are judged on looks more than men, but premise of your question entire buys into it and you are clearly perpetuating it.

I'm here for the fashion thread. I think she always looks great ... pretty and fit to begin with, and solid, if safe, fashion choices. Of course it's not the most important thing. But it's a nice diversion!

Agree that her suits look great on her. Does anyone know her exercise routine? Sports? Sorry if it's off topic. I can start a new thread about her to ask but there are so many!

You should start a new thread so the topic doesn’t get lost. I’m pretty she runs but not sure of much else.

I think it's pretty clear that I am not trying to end the practice of judging women more on looks than men with my post. I'm accepting reality. Don't hang out on a fashion thread if you don't care about fashion!

Kamala already knows how to dress well. Trump is the one who can improve his casual style. Nobody needs to wear suit and tie every day.

However, First Gentleman can add some interest to his wardrobe as Melania is very well-dressed.

Because there is no point. Kamala wears nicely tailored suits. That is not going to change and probably shouldn't. What else is there to say?

Agree. I care about fashion in Presidential candidates insofar that one role of the President is to represent the country on the international stage and fashion is a nonverbal form of communication that can really matter. But it think Harris does a good job on this front and she's never worn anything that I would worry about. She does an especially good job of communicating power and competence in her dressing while still expressing personality which I think is something female candidates have a much higher bar for (due to both the higher bar for women in leadership generally but also the great variety in womens fashion that creates a lot of potential pitfalls for women in leadership roles). I think it's worth pointing out that she's pretty much nailed this aspect of her role and that's hard to do.

Trump's fashion was regularly quite embarassing when he was President even though the bar is soooo much lower for a man as in theory all they have to do is wear a dark solid-color suit that fits reasonably well and not screw up shirt and tie choices (they can always just go with the standard options and no one will criticize them). And Trump cannot even do this. His suits are enormous and ill-fitting and his ties are too long. Either there is something wrong with his shoes or his shoes are doing nothing to help him with whatever is wrong with his posture. His makeup is consistently the wrong color and never properly blended. His hair is what is it is -- it's weird but kind of his signature so I'll leave it alone. But there are many things Trump could be doing to look more presidential and be a better representative of Amerca's image abroad. He's way too arrogant and vain to take a not though.

Judging the primary candidates on fashion and presentation (which I think is absolutely fair game given the symbolic and figure-head roles of the president) Harris is the clear winner here.

Kamala doesn't really do the dress or dramatic coats thing. She still dresses like a lawyer and I think it works for her -- tailored pant suits in bold colors with simple tops and shoes and statement jewelry that doesn't compete with her features.

She's also one of those women who has both a really striking and easily recognizable face even without a ton of makeup AND great hair. It makes her very telegenic. She of course wears lots of makeup (all high level politicians do even the men) but it just brings out her already strong features and she doesn't have to do much contouring.

Also like a lot of women of south asian and or african descent she can handle really bold colors both in her clothes and in her makeup and it never overpowers her.

She's actually got her look on lockdown and I don't think it needs any real updating for a presidential run. It helps that she has been a professional who needed to wear suits and have great presentation basically since she started working in her 20s and she's never had to present differently. Hilary had a harder time with this because she started working in a time when female lawyers were still not common and no one knew how they should dress and then she was first lady in Arkansas and in the White House and was constantly pushed to soften and feminize her look which later undermined her when she ran for office and had to find a professional wardrobe basically for the first time in her 50s. Kamala has been dressing the same for 30 years and she wears it well.

All of this.

That wasn't the question. Do you talk about what men wear? If she wore her bathroom and fuzzy slippers I would still vote for her over that orange man!
